Adopted dog—should we pay?

Anonymous
Before we got a dog, I had my child allergy tested to make sure she wasn’t allergic. I wanted to be fair to the dog and also prevent a situation where my child is watching me treat a living being as disposable - “oh well. I screwed up and got a dog - now let’s just give it away.”

How did the city find out about the dog?

Poor dog. These don't sound like good people.

I would strongly suggest refunding the adoption fee and asking for your dog back. Then look for a better adoption situation. Please don't feel guilty that this happened - sometimes people appear to be better adopters than they actually are. The important thing is to find your family pet a good home that you're comfortable with.

I strongly second this.

Good Lord, no! Don't send them anything. Tell them to meet you in a public place to return the dog. Now you know why the rescue groups are the way they are. Sorry you got caught up in that mess.

Neither does OP who adopted and gave away the dog without its shots.

Send them the records again and tell them you did what you needed to do, and they said they could afford to take care of the dog, so it's their turn in 2020.

OP said the dog was up-to-date on everything and as not. They charged a fee which they should not have if that was a lie. The fee is basically reselling the dog.

We had the dog first. Our newborn child kept ending up in the hospital with asthma. Sorry we didn’t return our child instead.

Thanks for the helpful responses. Will be blocking them.

You paid 100 dollars for the dog to readopted, your part in this was done when you handed the dog over to the rescue. They can take the dog back, if they were promised shots by the rescue. Or you could offer to take the dog back and hand it over to your local county dog rescue instead. As long as it's not a pit bull, it will probably be adopted.

Things happen OP, and it's hard to predict if kids will end up being allergic to a particular dog or not.

OP, ignore the thoughtless haters and decline to pay the other family. Hopefully they treat their dog better than they treat you!

How about either: offer to take the dog back and repay them the rehoming fee, or
Tell them you will only pay the vet directly for any needed shots. Do not just send them a check.

The only vaccine that is required by law is rabies. Everything else is optional.

Totally not your problem, but this would be a red flag to me that these are not responsible dog owners.

$200 also seems very high for mandatory shots, especially since your dog had at least some of his puppy vaccines. I don't know of any area that requires more than rabies and maybe distemper/parvovirus.
I agree that these people are trying to take advantage of you. I think I would offer to give the money back in exchange for the dog, and try to find another home for it. They just don't sound like good people.
