Critic our rankings and chances of getting in?

At this point, I would only put LAMB if the Kingsbury location is a viable option. Only because a number good enough for LAMB is going to be good enough for schools that are much closer and won't require getting lucky in the lottery again and another school transition for the child.

I don't know if this is true. With the impending move and as the school's first year in the Common Lottery (meaning you don't have people doing the lottery "just because, why not? it doesn't waste a spot") I think it's really possible that it will be easy to get a spot in South Dakota. It might be worth adding it in the number 10 or 11 spot. If you're IB at Bunker Hill you could always go there later.

I'm not sure - there could be a lot of applicants from those who live nearer to Kingsbury and will put up with commute for a while to move there. That's actually true already, LAMB in Brookland is full of Petworth people.

Hi neighbor. DCB is nearby, and might even be walking/biking distance depending on where you live in the neighborhood.

DCB had siblings not make it off the Pre-K3 waitlist this year. It's a non-starter.

OP, echoing a PP, your list is fine, but if your master number is 50th percentile or lower, the only school you'll probably get is Bunker. Unless you're happy with Bunker, consider some less competitive schools. Our number was right around 50% last year for Pre-K3 and we were waitlisted everywhere except our in bounds, and got an October offer at Breakthrough that we turned down. Even with all of the MV8 spots last year, we never got anywhere near an offer at Stokes, IT, YY, MV, Creative Minds, EL Haynes, and Lee.

A chart listing many of the popular PK3 school choices and their rough probability of acceptance would be super helpful if it existed...

Ugh, sorry, brain fart. PP here. We didn't list Creative Minds, but I think you do have a decent chance there. We didn't come close to an offer at Cap City. No idea why my brain mixed up the two.

You can get pretty close to this by looking at the historic waitlist data. If a DCPS hasn't let in an OOB student in 3 years, it's a wasted spot likely. If a charter only goes 6% of the way into it's waitlist, then you need to pretty much win the lottery to get an offer there. E.g., Stokes Brookland French pre-k 3 had 15 lottery seats, 189 on the waitlist, and made 20 waitlist offers by October. So that means approximately 200 kids applied (189+15) and there were a MAX of 35 offers (15 initially and 20 from the waitlist). YY had 60 spots, 454 on the waitlist, and made 14 offers. Etcetera. It takes some fiddling with the data, but you can pretty much figure out which you have to: (1) win the lottery (top 10%, maybe 15% depending on your schools); (2) do pretty well (top 75% I'd say); (3) do anything less than top half.

Anonymous wrote:Ludlow definitely feels like a wasted spot if you're OOB--they wait-listed 22 IB kids last year according to the DCPS data, and only made 5 wait list offers. Even if you got a phenomenal master number I don't think you'd get in. Without a sibling offered or attending, Shepherd and Whittier feel unlikely too (although weirder things have happened).

No harm in listing them if you can't think of 3 other schools you might consider ranking, but if you're bumping off other schools to make room for those 3 I'd maybe reconsider.

Can confirm L-T would be a wasted spot. A good friend's kid is #1 on the WL for PK3 and is IB. Started as #3 and only made it to #1 after bouncing up and down. So even the 5 WL offers is misleading, since some of those kids moved IB over the summer or got sibling preference when their K sibling enrolled.

That was this year. Does anyone know how many spaces might be available for next school year (2020-2021)?

1- Stokes - French
2- Stokes - Spanish
3- Inspired Teaching
4- Yu Ying
5- Shepherd Elementary
6- Ludlow
7- Mundo Verde
8- Creative Minds
9- E.L Haynes
10 - Whittier
11 - Lee Montessori
12 - Bunker Hill

I would drop Shepherd and Whittier and add Sela and maybe Bridges. Otherwise, see you at Bunker Hill!

Sela is a great, under the radar option.

Creative Minds seems to be on a downward trajectory, I think it’s safe to assume it will be at least as easy to get in, probably easier.

I just took a look at their waitlist offers and WHOA! 100 offers for PreK 4.

And they only had 8... does that mean 92 from PreK3 decided not to return to the school?

If you're willing to make the commute to Whittier or Shepard, and you like Montessori, add Breakthrough. It's a great under-the-radar little school that went pretty deep into their waitlist last year.

Assume it means 92 people turned down the slots.
