Surprising to me that FCPS let him get away with that when it's now clear that he was under investigation.

This is sad on so many levels.

Why do these men in leadership positions not deal with allegations relating to other teachers or administrators as they are required to under the law? Are they afraid that something will come out that portrays them in an unfavorable light?

From all accounts, Azimi was otherwise doing a good job and the school has been in free fall with an incompetent interim since he went or was put on leave.

Academically, I do not know.

It is middle school, though, and middle schoolers are jerks.

They really are the worst. I can say that for the ones at all of the middle schools in the area including my own children. All they want to do is hang out at Waters and then they all cause trouble. It is all middle school BS. This goes for Thoreau and Kilmer, boys and girls. They thrive on drama, group chats and whatever is happening in the town of Vienna when they ran into so and so yesterday.

I will be interested to hear. This is the second FCPS principal facing such a charge. I have no idea what specifically is alleged to have happened as far as him not reporting, but the only way I see this sticking is if he was told of specific allegations with both student and teacher named and he tried to sweep it under the rug.

I mean, the underlying case came to light when the parents of the student told police about inappropriate text messages and the student told the police what happened. If that was the first the principal had heard about it I don't know how he could be guilty of failing to report.

I guess I should be happy my Kilmer student is lazy.

Sent on Behalf of Douglas A. Tyson, Assistant Superintendent, Region 1

Dear Thoreau Middle School Families,

On Wednesday, September 23, we learned that Fairfax County Police charged Thoreau principal Yusef Azimi with failure to properly report child abuse and neglect in a timely manner as required under the law. This charge stems from an investigation that took place in November 2019. At that time, Mr. Azimi was placed on administrative leave and remains on leave.

FCPS takes this matter seriously and an FCPS Human Resources administrative investigation was conducted concurrently with the police investigation. There is no greater responsibility of a school system than the safety and well-being of our students. Our teachers and staff are trained in best practices and legal requirements regarding mandated reporting of suspected abuse.

We are saddened and distressed by these allegations involving our employee. Police issued a news release on this matter here.

The Thoreau family has shouldered a series of tremendous burdens over the past academic year. Yet the community continues to galvanize to support and uplift one another. I am so grateful for your continued attention to the social, emotional, and academic well-being of our students. Our current interim principal, Sharamaine Williams, the administrative team, and the entire Thoreau staff are working daily to provide support and outstanding education to our Eagles.

If you or your student would like to speak with a counselor, or need support in any way, please reach out to Ms. Sharamaine Williams at any time.

Thank you for your continued support of Thoreau Middle School.

Sincerely,
Douglas A. Tyson
Assistant Superintendent, Region 1

Reading the announcement it comes across as the admin is supportive of this scum.

One of the tremendous burdens the Thoreau family has shouldered over the past academic year is having Doug Tyson as its Assistant Superintendent. He was one in a string of mediocre principals at Kilmer and has saddled numerous schools in Region 1 with hires who aren't very good at their jobs.

I get the anger, but come on people. A) the principal has been charged. A charge is not a verdict of guilt. And B) these are really messy employment/legal issues - I'm not sure what people expect other than a factual and neutral statement like this.
