I think you are looking at pics of his daughter. I wouldn’t characterize his wife as a “young thing”.

No, they were looking at his co-host - Holly Willoughby. If you google his name all the pictures are of him and her. If you google him and 'wife', then the wife pops up.

It was much more surprising when Elizabeth Smart's dad came out as gay. But this is like ... if Jessica Simpson's dad announced he was gay. Nobody would be surprised.

I think the coming out is more for the individual. Think of the internalized homophobia this guy has worked through and dealt with for the last 50 years. He likely needs to be able to talk about being gay - not for others but for himself. I am not a fan of making such a big deal of it but I do think it is a little different to be gay as a teen these days than to be a gay 57 year old who has had a 27 year marriage with adult kids.

And it is really hard to know how is gay and who isn't. Especially in Britain (and other parts of western Europe) where men are far more likely to embrace feminine qualities, be physically affectionate with other men, wear British fashion etc.

I don't know who schofield is but I clicked the link, saw the first photo and immediately thought "he's gay". I know that's not PC. There was nothing shocking about the bolded statement above, either. I'm a straight woman, oddly known for my gaydar. Again, I know that's not PC. I don't have any judgements that come with my knowledge, just an awareness, honestly sometimes even before the other person is aware/acknowledges it.
