We declined to fill a Tamiflu prescription that we got at urgent care after the doctor's description of the hallucination side effects, which he said have led to kids injuring themselves - wasn't clear if that was active self harm or deciding they could fly or what but I decided to hold off until we could talk to our normal pediatrician. When I called the next morning, our normal ped said they no longer prescribe Tamiflu for kids without other risk factors such as asthma, because of the hallucinations. Would they have prescribed it for the kid in the article? I have no idea. But from what I understand, the hallucinations are potentially dangerous. All that said, I certainly don't think anyone should be getting their medical advice from facebook, especially not from anti-vaxxers. |
Ehh, a 4 year old with the flu wouldn't really even get a tamiful rx from me, unless there were extenuating circumstances. This is one case where the anti-vaxxers aren't actually the appropriate scapegoats. |
The kid had a seizure and fever, and everyone else in the house had the flue, so the ped prescribed Tamiflu. The anti-science nutjobs just told the mom what she wanted to hear--natural approaches. Tamiflu can be used prophylactically. |
These screenshots are horrific. All this scientific advancement and facebook kills it all by allowing such misinformation to spread

Bottom line.
Mother took advice from online nut cases instead of the Medical professionals. Now she is blaming FACEBOOK. Nope not ok. This is her fault period. Tamiflu or not she failed as a mother period. |
Facebook needs to shut down. |
Sounds like she didn’t give Tylenol or meds to reduce the fever then he had a seizure. That would have been step one in preventing the baby’s death. What an idiot |
Of course they are. Just by being anti -vaxxers! They spew crap daily. And not medical professionals. There is absolutely a correlation to anti-vaxxers and kids dying. While we can not fix stupid (ie the mother in this case) we can spread science and not anti-vaxing garbage. |
I was at doc today - she said:
1) Tamuflu really only works the first couple days 2) even then it just shortens duration 3) some kids have really bad side effects. It certainly did not sound like prescribing to kids is the standard wisdom - and I am NOT at a spot that is “crunchy/granola” at all. |
Heed the warning from this thread. Many people on this forum diagnose all the time. It can be dangerous especially if someone is impressionable and frightened. None of us should project our experiences by proxy.
This also applies to parents looking for guidance/referrals for kid's developmental issues. There's always one or more that diagnose ADD, ASD, anxiety, depression. Just give a referral if you have one and assurance that it will be ok. Be gentle delivering your experiences and lead them to the experts. |
Bull sh*t. Recommending a kid get additional testing to determine adhd, ASD or depression is NOTHING like telling a parent to ignore medical advice to a gravely I’ll child. Science is useful as the op said. Neuropsychologists, psychiatrists, and gps are useful. Sometimes they get it wrong. So put that up your nuts and elderberry. |
Our pediatrician doesn't recommend tamiflu. BUT we are all vaccinated. I bet she didn't vaccinate, otherwise she wouldn't be on that forum. |
