Our kids have missed 1-3 days per year for various vacations. We tacked on a day after a 4 day weekend to go to Mexico. They are missing 2 days in February to go to Utah. I tell the school in advance that we will be traveling. I would not lie.
And I don’t think it matters or not that your child may have some special needs. I would not call it a mental sick day. My kids are rarely sick and miss school due to sickness. |
My daughter is ahead of grade level in all subjects, but is very young for her grade. Her behavior tends to drop when she is tired of school and needs a break from structure and expectations. At her conference earlier this year her first grade teacher actually recommended giving her days off when she is fatigued with school. The teacher explained that it's better for her to take a day off occassionally, rather than for us to send a kid to school knowing that she's wound up and just going to get herself into trouble. We agree. She gets breaks as needed, maybe 2-3 a year. |
I’m really surprised the teacher said that. As a parent, I would not let my child miss school because child needs a break. The kids have so many breaks. Every month there is a long weekend. Some months there are multiple long weekends. There is no shortage of breaks. |
It is fine to take the day, but don't try to get it counted as a 'sick' day. Tell the school upfront that he will miss day X for a family event or whatever and get all of the assignments sent ahead for him to complete. People take their kids on vacation all the time, how is this different? |
Perhaps a mental health day for a SN kid having a mental health day would be legitimate.
Taking him skiing and calling it a mental health day is wrong and I would not do it. |
