Is this OP? If so, your kid didn’t take it. Only one test has to be offered to students arriving after first grade.

Yes, I am the OP and I asked that question. Thanks a lot! I feel frustrated that zero information or guidance was provided by the school at the beginning of 3rd grade, I guess it’s expected that every parent knows everything there is to know about these programs.

I hear you. You missed this year’s referral deadline which was January 9. You will have to wait until next year to refer him.

Which means he wouldn’t even start AAP until 6th grade. I’m asusming he is in 4th this year?

OP here, he is in 3rd grade currently, I suppose if he makes it then he will start around Jan 29 of 4th grade. Is that correct?

I don’t know what school you’re at, but I will bet my paycheck that the advanced academic resource teacher held an information meeting in early October for all parents to explain the AAP testing and procedures. And all of this information is online. And you could have easily asked your child’s teacher at your November parent conference, and he/she would have directed you to the AART. All parents are not expected to know all about these programs, but they are expected to access the resources provided including in person meetings and online information.

This. And no there is no starting in January for families that are not new to FCPS. You are no longer new. You should have referred him earlier this month to be considered for admission at the beginning of next school year.

This is not correct. He has missed the chance of taking CogAT at school and you have missed the referral deadline. This means you need to complete the process when he is a 4th grader. And if he is accepted, he will start the AAP at the beginning of the 5th grade.

You should have attended the AAP orientation meetings as another PP just mentioned. You should schedule a meeting with your AART now so you know what needs to be done.

Also, OP, just so you know ... even if your kid had scored a 132 (or 142 or 152) on the CogAT, you still would had to refer him earlier this month. There is no automatic consideration for anyone but second graders who have an in-pool score. 3rd graders (and up) are not in the screening pool regardless of scores.

And when you do, please do not embarrass yourself by complaining that you had no idea about the process or that the information is difficult to find. It will be rude, and you’ll come off as entitled because you chose not to take responsibility.

I’m sorry PP, but no. You missed all deadlines. You will have to refer him next year when he is in 4th, which means the earliest he can start would be 5th grade.

OP here. Some of us don’t live and die by AAP information, there was NO meeting held in October, also there was no
Parent conference either. Our experience with FCPS has been dismal. Thank you for your response though.

Yes there was. Every AART holds one. Information is posted in school newsletters. Name your school.

I mean this gently, but are you by chance a working parent? I’ve noticed the working parents tend to miss emails and meetings often. They tend to be out of the loop when it comes to school events. Also, first quarter conferences in FCPS are held in early November. This school year they were on November 4 and 5. Some teachers choose to do them earlier in October and leave this days solely for planning. Did you miss the sign up genius perhaps? It’s usually sent by email. Sorry, but I don’t believe there was no conference offered at the end of the first quarter. Did you email the teacher to ask for one?

Not every school has scheduled parent teacher conferences. Our school requires that you schedule one on your own after first grade. There was no mass planned day for conferences. We scheduled ours after the first report card. So conferences are available but not as easily as at some other schools.

But I would be shocked if the AART did not have a general meeting about AAP options in October and a Level IV specific meeting in December.

My one kid’s school is a center.

Her teacher this year (who is wonderful otherwise) did not offer conferences in the fall - just said at BTSN to contact her in Nov or Dec if you need/want one.

And that school does not do info sessions for AAP. Or maybe it does but only offers them to 2nd grade and does not advertise them above that.

Other kid’s school does both each year. People should stop harping on OP. Not all schools are the same.

AART’s are required to offer the info sessions for all grade levels in early fall. I’ll bet it was offered at the center school, but you were not paying attention as it doesn’t apply to you.

That was my point. This parent didn’t take initiative and ask for a conference. Strange.

The part in bold is offering conferences in the fall. 3rd grade teacher here. I agree. A parent can request a conference at any time. At the end of October/beginning of November I met with parents of about 15 of my students. There are no specific dates set aside for elementary school conferences.
