Best trips with a 5 & 7 yo

Mexico City is a great city with a lot for the grown ups and a lot for the kids. We live here with kids the same ages as yours.

Portland, Maine is also a nice mix of beach and museums, concerts, etc...

NP. That sounds good to me. Which airport do you use for that? Logan?

NP. We are going to TP this summer for the first time. We are flying to Burlington (connecting - we live in Texas). You should email ASAP. It's probably already sold out for 2020 but there might be availability if you are flexible as to weeks.

No, for TP you can fly into Burlington, Vermont. Then it is about a 40 minute drive. They always have cancellations if people get sick, etc, so call them and make sure they have you on a waitlist. It's the best!!

After what feels like years of driving distance trips (I hated flying with gear) and a LOT of beach vacations, we are finally at a point where we can go a bit farther.

But for someone who loved to travel pre-kids, I'm having the travel planning equivalent of writer's block. I absolutely loathe theme parks (although we'll get to Disney someday) and DH gets bored really easily, so we need somewhere with a good amount of activities, largely kid-friendly. DCs are good little travelers but my 5 yo especially can get worn out and whiny if he's trapped in "grown up land" too long. And I love a fancy hotel

Thinking about San Antonio / Austin for Spring Break, and would love to go overseas for at least one of the other two trips, budget permitting. What have your favorite trips with kids these ages been?

San Antonio and Austin ... I think you’ll be bored there with kids unless you’re staying at a hotel or resort that is the main attraction. What kinds of things are you planning to do? Maybe combine it with a dude ranch and do a night in each city. The main attractions in San Antonio are Alamo which would be super boring with kids and the Riverwalk which is really just a restaurant district. Austin has good food and pretty parks but there isn’t much for kids to do.

Your husband’s boredom is what is causing your block. You’re having a reaction to his expected negativity. Been there.

Ireland. Lots of land to run around in. Fancy castles to stay in, ruins to explore.

My kids blew my mind in France last summer (same age) - they were so much fun to travel with! We did a scavenger hunt at the Lourve, did the Ferris Wheel above the city & hit every merry go round. We love the South of France & Brittany as well. The whole family loved it. We are not sure what trip will ever measure up. Maybe Italy in a few years - we are not a family to go to Europe every summer. Enjoy whatever you do!

Only downside is that Scandinavia is somewhat expensive, especially in the summer as compared to Central/Southern Europe. But we did nine days with 2 adults and 3 kids for about $5k all-in *excluding flights,* so it can be done. We mostly airbnb'd but I snuck in 2 nice hotel nights for a break.

Agree with this. Denmark (including Legoland). Paris is great for kids too. Other options: Montreal, Vancouver, maybe Portugal
