Please get rid of GDA and ECNL

ECNL just created Regional ECNL or ECNL, which means that the B teams from clubs like FCV, Bethesda, and MUFC will no longer play in state cup and against other local teams. The top non-ECNL/DA teams are increasingly unable to play the ECNL/DA teams in tournaments. College coaches don't even bother with no-ECNL/DA showcases. Where does that leave girls that are strong enough to play ECNL/DA but for financial reasons, can't join a team.

High level youth soccer is for kids with enough disposable income. Outside of boys funded academies, that is who this business serves. Will not change. It is a business and exists for those customers that can pay that is just the way it is.

College coaches would do well to look outside the country club leagues if they want to find good players that have talent but not a lot of cash.

Some of them do. Several colleges have players rostered from overseas.

While I don’t have a problem with paying for my DD to be in ECNL assuming she can make it. What I have a problem with is the extensive travel requirements. I just don’t know how my DD’s schooling/academics will suffer if she is playing in ECNL.

Why do you think your kids only option is playing in ECNL?

I have a U19 so maybe things are different with the younger ages but with the older games/showecases are almost always scheduled on a Friday (sometimes even a Thursday) and then into the weekend. Players must miss school which gets tough in high school and something does eventually give. Players can say they will study in the hotel but few manage to pull off quality work time. It is hard to do.

For GDA, the most recent showcase in FL involved missing at least 4 days of school. For some age groups 5.

This was crazy-why didn’t they do it over winter break instead so kids didn’t have to miss so much school? In HS it is tough to make that work up!!

Winter break is in February for many kids. Missing lots of HS classes for sports is a real burden and so unnecessary to learn to play well.

What public school has winter break in February?

If these players are hopeuly of playing in college, they need to get use to the balance.

Most of the kids playing ECNL or DA are disciplined, competitive, and hard working to begin with and keeping up with HS work is doable for them. Having said that, the Friday and Monday showcasedays are silly. There is no need for this. It is simply convenience for the tournament directors and college coaches at the expense of the kids and their families (miss school, miss work).

Of course there is no need for this. No where else in the world are thousands of kids missing that much school as the finance plane tickets and hotels to learn this sport. It is a deluxe faux mini pro experience.... soccer Disney world. People are just paying for admission to the theme park.

And you are free to not participate.

I love how folks who are not involved get so upset about the things that other people do.

My player participates. It was not clear initially to me when we joined the team what this really is. Sure I could pull my player ( female) but I don't as she adores it. But if I had it to do over, would have stayed in a much less burdensome league.

That is all on you then. How dumb not to look into it more before you signed on the line.

The bigger problem is the ignorance of parents who blindly sign their kids up for such commitments and then bitch about it later.

Know ahead of time what you’re getting into. I have no sympathy for people like you.
