We have faux wood blinds from Hone Depot. They look pretty good.

THIS.

Look at some tutorials for making drapes with lining and pinch pleats. It takes a lot of fabric, a very good sewing machine, and hours of work for just one panel.

Yes, you can go cheap. You could buy semi-custom (like Half-Priced Drapes dot come) or from Pottery Barn or RH. Some people can't tell the difference between basic drapes and custom ones. If that's you, which might be the case since you're posting this, don't spend the money.

Thanks for the advice, but I'm an OBGYN and work crazy unpredictable hours and my DH is a LEO. We don't do any DIY. We pay extra for the easy button.

I've waited years to do this because time is so valuable, I hate to waste it on even a 3hr appointment to choose the window treatments. I still have paper shades up in a few of our rooms and it has been years.

Just simply shocked at the prices. I had an idea in my head of what I thought it would cost, but then it came in at 3x.

I wasn't telling you to make the drapes, silly. I was telling you to look at how they are made since you're shocked by the cost. You obviously have zero idea of what custom work entails.

You think picking materials is a waste of time? Custom isn't for you.
The cost is THREE TIMES what you thought it would be? Custom isn't for you.

You don't value or understand the custom route and it's a waste of money for you.

At those rates you should look at Pottery Barn curtains. Not expensive compared to the custom prices, although still pricey by my book. And they look very nice, especially the Belgian linen drapes. I always wander over to their drapery section to admire what they have when I'm at a Pottery Barn (very seldom).

Again, thanks for your wisdom and knowledge of curtain making. Very powerful information.

A decorator is a better choice than a blinds salesperson for drapes.

^^^ I believe pp had a good point. If you don’t appreciate or understand the work of the custom drapes, why bother paying custom prices?
Would you insist on a Rolls Royce when a (insert less expensive luxury car) would meet your needs?
However, if you have money and time to burn, go for it.

Not the op, but quite honestly, you people are trite. Get a life. Seriously. You are a loser.

The “easy button” costs $$$$. As a highly paid professional you know taking someone’s time costs money.

You’re welcome!

I’m reading this thread kind of stunned that someone would go through the process of having custom drapes made and be so irritated by it.

I’d LOVE to have fabrics from Schumacher, Thibaut, etc in front of me and get to have drapes designed for me. What a dream!

I agree that I’d this isn’t something you enjoy or value, just go with a simple linen from Pottery Barn (or Ballard, Restoration Hardware, etc). It’s seems like a waste to use gorgeous fabric and manpower to make something you’re not really interested in.

Honestly we got blinds and curtains from Lowe’s and they are fine. And we live in a nice house with other custom items.

I hate seeing blinds in a house. The honeycomb ones are the worst. Ew.

Yes, with the money I saved buying my trite RH drapes.

I don’t see what’s wrong with curtain rods and curtains from
somewhere mid range like pottery barn etc. I don’t really see the need for blinds. I guess if you live in the city or a high traffic area but then stents you opening and closing blinds all the time?

You people have active dramatic imaginations. Where did it say the OP is irritated with it?

I also have custom shutters and curtains. Cost me 46k for 17 windows and 2 doors. The reason we went custom is because I didn't want to shop, I wanted a designer to come to my home with samples. I actually don't really care about whatever brands you are mentioning, don't give a single fu%K. I just wanted a designer to come in, match my house and furniture and be done. I wasn't going to schlep to Pottery Barn or Home depot.
