at what age do girls stop wailing when getting their hair combed?

OP,
How long is your daughter's hair and is it straight or super curly? My mother used to hold my hair at the top near the scalp, and when she brushed it I could not feel the pull. Also she divided it into four to six sections. Does your daughter brush her hair at all? I think this would be a great age to start teaching her that.

I have 2 long haired daughters ages 9 and 7. They don't moan (often) because they've been having hair done every day of their lives so it's just a fact of life. They use conditioner with every hair wash and spray in detangler before brushing. A lot depends on the kind of brush too. I have an old fashioned Goody one with bristles that is much more gentle than a paddle brush. They also know to run the brush through their hair after brushing teeth at night to cut down on morning tangles.

If she's putting up a fight though, I'd look at a shorter style of have some layers cut in it to thin it out and cut down on the tangles.

I have a white boy with shoulder length hair. My rule is that he controls the length so long as I don't have a problem dealing with body maintenance. I think nine is too old for major parental annoyance about hair. (I may be out of line for children of color - I don't know anything about those hair maintenance issues and will therefore keep my mouth shut.)

My daughter has VERY thick hair and she is very tender headed. I finally found a brush that does not hurt. Found it at Sephoria, about $30, boars hair. So worth the $, no more tears.

OP here - thanks for the all the helpful replies. After trying more conditioners, better hairbrushes, wearing pony-tails at night, they agreed it was time to cut it off. Problem solved. All my girls have cute little bob cuts now and no tears.

My daughter's hair is in a short bob. She's never wailed.

Brush out and braid long hair before they sleep. No tangles in the morning.

YES YES! My sister alerted me that the board hair brush is what you need. I didn't spend $30 but it makes a big difference.
