Mice? How bad of a problem is it?
Anonymous
Yes mice. Seeing one is a bad problem in my eyes. But having one run across the floor during class time isn't cute. It was brought to the schools attention, I am hoping that they take the time to plug all of the holes in the school and not just put down traps and pellets....that would be something for my young child to walk in to a classroom to find a dead mouse on the floor.

They leave in 6th grade to go to WLatin and Deal.

The mice? Pretty funny.

How big is that class? Is there really room at those two schools for all of them (assuming a small minority is in-bounds for Deal)? Isn't OOB at Deal and 6th grade admission to WashLatin very competitive?

Strange choice, because Haynes scores better than Deal on standardized tests.

And yes, that is all there is to an education. A score on a standardized test. Such heady, heady aspirations you have for your child...

I think Haynes is ~75/class at that point (and the vast majority stay).

It's kind of maddening to see people comment about planning to pull their kids out of a school when they are in 3rd/4th/5th grade "because that's when the school gets rough/non-diverse/etc." Have you considered that folks like you who opt out are the ones who are causing the shift in population between elementary and middle school? It is probably not the teachers, building, materials or school philosophy that suddenly change.

Yes, people should all make decisions that they don't believe are optimal for their children based on concern for the greater good. Gimme a break.

Really. People who stay for their reasons and people who go for theirs. Why the pressure? Let them go if they want if it is best for their child, and stay if it makes sense for yours.

I suspect the PP was trying to highlight a collective action problem -- it might well be that the school (Haynes or wherever) would actually be the right place for everyone if everyone stayed, but the more who leave, the fewer it's still right for.

I think the mice are coming over from our old house (in Petworth!) It's a green leafy neighborhood with all old houses - mice are a huge problem for all our neighbors. Mosquitoes are horrible too 'round there.
We live close by but as PS-3 parents we were turned off a bit by the Haynes administration's attitude during our tours. We will probably look at them again for 5th grade, and WLatin, and privates.

Wow, I've never seen nor heard of a mouse problem at Haynes, but wouldn't care much if I did. I've been too distracted by the excellent teachers, thoughtful administration, committed parents and respectful kids, renovated facility, leafy green space, two outdoor playgrounds, newly completed wing for daily specials--and the lovely salt-water aquarium in the lobby ain't bad either. Mice?

Every school in this city has mice.
