traffic makes me irate.

Please don't run over anyone.
That is all.

LOL at traffic complaining about traffic. Get out of your car. It is possible. No one else is just going to magically get out of your way.

Telework. If you can't do that, get a job closer to home if possible. It made a huge difference in my quality of life.

Complain to your senator/congressman about the removal of telework for federal employees. Gridlock is created by policies that pour people onto the roads.

Traffic has always sucked around here. I remember in the 50's my grandpa saying the main factor in buying his house in Fort Hunt area was anywhere he didn't have to commute on Shirley Highway.

Nothing can "make" you irate

seriously doubt he has to drive in rush hour traffic to get to a job or appointments.

seriously do some meditation, traffic does not make you mad you need to control yourself.

I retired because I hated the commute. I'm so much happier now. And without meditation.

You should write a book on how meditation does not make you happier.

Try it so your family can tolerate you over the holidays.

Actually living in the burbs is better for your mental health.

You are not "in" traffic, you are the traffic, OP.

Silly question, but how do you queue them up and how do you play them? I have only done this on my computer or my phone with wi-fi.

Get a bike, you can live in the burbs (at least the inner ones) and still have a beautiful commute to DC.

If you work in the inner burbs, you can probably bike commute from the outer burbs.

+1 You can't let it get to you. If you let it make you irate, then you will be irate every single day. That's no way to live. Be in charge of yourself.

Yes I agree OP. Especially when I am LATE to an appointment. Random, unexpected traffic snarls happen frequently around here. Considering moving to a less "dense" area next year, as one day road rage will get the best of me!

I like all the suggestions for moving near your job. That's a great idea, but sort of difficult if you have two employed people in teh household -- what's the chance they can both score a job nearby? If it means uprooting kids and going to a new school, that's even more complicated.

My irritant is stop-and-go traffic. I dont' midn a long drive if I'm moving. My new car has traffic assist so it basically drives in stop-and-go traffic. It'll use the brake and accelerator and also keep me in the lane. I just hold the wheel and it does most of the work. My stress levels went down a lot once I got that.

My wife and I have that issue. We found a good mid point that let’s us both use public transportation or bikes if we want to. She usually drives, but if she gets fed up with traffic she has a pretty easy bus ride in.

Traffic makes me irate too, and I drive like 20 minutes per day, max. (to the metro garage and back.) It's amazing how many jerk drivers I can encounter in a 10-minute 2-mile trip.

Sometimes it's not the drivers, it's the light timing. It drives me nuts when lights are timed to give you 7 red lights in a row when the opposing direction has literally no cars waiting to go. It's stupid.
