Worried about schools closing for TWO weeks???!!!

For those whose residential roads have not been plowed, are you in a homeowners' association neighborhood? My entire subdivision is fully plowed, other than people's alleys. We're in a master planned community and from what I understand, the dues we pay cover the plow crews.

I guess that's partly worth the annual dues...

Fairfax County can't even manage their budget - if they open I will be shocked.

I bet this is a golden opportunity for them to reduce costs for a few days by closing for so long.

Yes, but the hourly employees who live paycheck by paycheck are probably not as ecstatic. And with this being so close to the holidays I am sure some of their plans have been dashed.

Yeah. What is the County supposed to do? Open schools when it's dangerous?

FCPS teacher here. You have to remember all the staff that comes into the county from many other places. I work at a high school in Falls Church and there are many teachers at our school who come from Loudon and Prince William Counties, as well as parts of Maryland and DC. So while the neighborhoods around the schools might be clear, if you can't get your teachers in to teach, how is that going to work? I am happy about having the days off now, but do worry about the rest of the winter since our snow days will be used up as of Wednesday.

My son is in sports camp during much of the Christmas holiday. Next year sign your kids up for child care if two weeks is too long.

Thanks for posting. I think some people forget that school is for an education not childcare.

build up leave and take it. I always take off the week btwn xmas and new years. is it possible to plan to save time for next year?

Of course school is for education. And the reality is that nowadays, many parents work, not to mention single mothers like me. School is an integral part of our childcare arrangements. Also schools closing means my before and after care solution is closed.

As a single parent, I pay $25,000 in daycare costs a year. That would be in addition to the taxes I pay which support our school. I don't get much PTO. This situation means Leave without pay for me which creates serious difficulties in paying leave.

Not FCPS problem. My problem. I don't believe my original post suggested otherwise.

That is, "serious difficulties in paying bills".
