That’s a classic spot for sebborheic dermatitis-are you sure it’s eczema? |
Lifelong eczemaic here. As PPs mentioned, stop OTC hydrocortisone NOW. I have been told to never use hydrocortisone on the face, ever. It thins the skin.
I have premature crepe-y and mottled skin on the bends of my arms where my parents would apply then-prescription hydrocortisone cream like clown makeup. And, consider allergy testing. Wish my parents would have; my eczema would flare in cold winter months (grew up in Midwest!) on my lips, under my chin. Learned in my 30s that I was very sensitive to wheat and dairy and tomatoes. I suggest Vaseline or Eucerin to keep the area hydrated. Even dabs of plain mineral oil at night. Find the simplest, non irritating moisturizer and stick with it and make it part of a 3x day routine. I can't use Cetaphil, even though every dermatologist I've ever had (and I've had many) immediately recs this. Cetaphil burns and irritates my skin. I use only dove soap to wash. |
No. What would the treatment difference be? |
NP. My 12 year old daughter had this chronically around her nose and sometimes chin. Perioral dermatitis. 100% successful treatment for her is taking probiotics- specifically Florastor. My son had eczema and we used the young living lavender lotion which cleared it up right away. I would put it on as soon as I saw him rubbing the insides of his elbows and behind his knees, when the eczema rash was just starting. |
Another poster who was going to suggest that this may not be eczema. Perioral dermatitis classically shows up under the nose (peri-oral - literally means around the eyes and mouth). It most frequently hits women and young girls. I got it for the first time in 2nd grade. People who get eczema are more prone to perioral dermatitis. Hears the rub: the precise cure for eczema is the worst flare for perioral dermatitis: cortisone. But they look almost identical. My only guaranteed cure for P-O D is antibiotics, but i'm currently attempting to navigate a flare with apple cider vinegar (which makes it worse before better). |
I'm trying rose hip oil, which sinks in pretty quickly and can be used before/under vaseline. |
This is what we do too. I also apply hydrocortisone cream underneath that layer when the eczema gets particularly bad. |
I'd maybe try lanolin (you know, the kind you put on your boobs if you breastfed) covered with aquaphor. |
OP here coming back later. Thanks for this helpful info! I also get perioral dermatitis that is relieved by antibiotic ointment (miupirocin). Why wouldn't you use that instead of cider (which is going to irritate & inflame further?) As for my son ... I think it's eczema that also can get infected, to make matters more confusing. For this flare-up I just kept the area clean and moisturized with vaseline 2-3x/day, and it healed when he stopped rubbing it. |
This is NOT eczema! This is irritation from the acid and bacteria's and water in the nasal discharge. First of all while the cold lasts, star early to rinse the area with just warm water and dry really well. Do it regularly. Put some barrier. Natural way is olive oil or old fashion and effective way - butter as it has already vitamin D from milk. Others might have other suggestions. It has nothing to do with food, it is all about bacteria in his snoot. And not cleaning nose often enough. Have a klinex nearby and let him use it often to blow the nose |
Geez, not Aquaphor so close to the nose, kid can get asthma. Lanolin is an oil from wool .. sheep, many people can get allergic reaction to it. |
First try to use natural methods before you go into antibiotics. |
