Indigenous peoples day is Monday October 14.

I would like to know the employer who allows people a paid holiday for student conferences. Please share. Readying my resume.

I work for an employer that follows the federal holiday schedule. It is not the purpose of student conferences, but the public school recognizes that many parents are off on that day, so they have conferences that day. Go ahead and get your resume ready; I'm sure this is not unique in all the world.

Every employer in DC has to allow 24 hours of leave for parents to attend school-related activities. It doesn't have to be paid leave but if you have the paid leave time they have to allow you to take it in most circumstances.

Can anyone report which schools pay teachers for their personal time used to hold parent conferences outside of contract hours?

You also don’t have to go to conferences. If you feel like things are going well with your child, it’s ok to skip it if setting up the meeting truly stresses you out that much. Teachers may be fine doing the conference by phone if getting across town is difficult.

This is true - I emailed one my child's teacher sand said I didn't have any specific concerns, and that unless they had something they wanted to speak about I was ok to skip the conference.

My other child in a different grade I do have concerns about, so I'm going to a conference for him.

I hate that they sit on assessment data for weeks to reveal during the conference instead of getting it to parents ahead of time so we can prepare questions.

Ours are on 11/11 we are MCPS though, sorry to derail a DC thread. Our kids have school but its early release. Conferences are in the afternoon until 530

our are all day. I have the first slot at 8am but it looked like it went until at least 4 or 4pm.

Ours are on 11/11 we are MCPS though, sorry to derail a DC thread. Our kids have school but its early release. Conferences are in the afternoon until 530

Cap City traditionally has parent teacher conference on 11/11 - as a CHARTER they can decide what days the teachers work.

How can we support what she's doing in class at home?

Veteran's day. It's a federal holiday. Not all parents, but many. Husband and I are off.

To say that "many" are off is a stretch. If you work for the government, sure. But most do not. Our elementary school is 12-7.

Every employer I've had in the last 15 years has followed the government for paid holidays. So not everyone, but more than government employees.

Then you are lucky. I have never gotten it off and neither has my spouse.

+1. People get so jazzed up about going. Certainly, if you are having issues then take the time and go. But if all is well and you have a good relationship with the teacher, they are a waste of time. However, most of the Type A people around here want to here how wonderful DC is so it can validate their superior parenting (or so they think!).
