Yes, you are supposed to acknowledge the garbage guys in some way ($, food, a hat, whatever).

However mine suck beyond belief and have caused thousands of dollars of property damage to my home. so they will not be getting any brownies and $.

OP here.. thanks everyone for your help! I want to do something special for our mail carrier as they are so helpful and thoughtful by doing things that aren't required. I think since they go out of their way to do really nice things so should I. I also really like the links! They really help with ideas of some nice things to make/give.

So sorry! I would definitely call the company and let them know. They should pay for any damage done.

I think it is unethical to give mail carriers and garbage collectors a gift. It's a public service, for God's sake. My taxes are paying for this public service. It all smells fishy giving a public servant a gift.

I give hairdressers, housecleaners, nannies (when I had one), lawn care people tips. I don't give people in the government tips, and they should all be illegal.

I agree. This just seems wrong.

not all areas have publicly funded garbage collection.

Well then I'll tip those guys. Point is: Public servant, no tip.

Why in the world would it be unethical to give mail carriers a gift on a holiday? I am not 'gifting" them for what they are paid to do, but rather how they go out of their way to do things that are NOT required. I think you need a reality check on your attitude. It is really sad at how snotty you actually sound. I also don't think it is illegal to give gifts to anyone that you want. It isn't like I am a politican and paying for votes. Get real already!

I honestly don't think you tip anyone. Here is a 'tip" for you though.. lose your snotty attitude. OP wasn't asking IF you tipped, but rather what you did. If you don't give a gift or tip then what really do you have to offer as advice?

We now have at least three, and I can't keep up. The one I really liked only delivers once - or maybe twice - a week.

NO, actually I do tip...EVERYONE. Except public servants. Clearly this is an issue of principal, on which we apparenty disagree. It's doesn't mean I'm "snooty". It mean I don't believe in the practice of tipping someone paid by the government throug my taxes (and your taxes) for service. Having worked more than 20 (yes, I'm old) in the field of good goverance, seeking ways to ensure that government regulations and services cannot be capture by a few individuals, I look for ways to acknowledge my gratitude in other non-monetary ways (which, in my book, still have value).

PP again. My keyboard is clearly in need of replacing. I'm actually pretty good at spelling.

FWIW, the Postal Service doesn't take ANY money from the public. They are run as a semi-govt agency and cannot use taxpayer money. Last year the Postal Service lost 7 BILLION dollars because of the loss of 1st class mail and the internet diversion. However, millions of new addresses are occuring every year so the cost to deliver is going up.

I would give my carrier a tip but he's gone now, and we have temporary people all the time. Generally mail doesn't arrive until 5-7pm now.
