Missing child from NJ- Dulce Alvarez

There is specific criteria for amber alerts, about knowing who the abductor is. This isn’t even a proven case of abduction.

There WAS an amber alert for her. I think the speculation around the abduction is kind of ridiculous and the media coverage was handled so poorly. The mom was 30 yards away by the playground in her car with another 8yo child. Witnesses saw a man lure the girl into a van with sliding doors and tinted windows.

I took my 6 and 4 year olds to the playground last weekend. I’d taken medication that made me extremely nauseous for about 20 minutes so I allowed them to go play while I waited it out in the car, overlooking the playground. Dulce’s mom was 30 yards away in a car with another child. That’s not neglect.

Yes it is. She obviously was not watching the whole time or she would have seen where her daughter went.

Though, I don’t think it’s even certain they went to the playground. What does the “eight year old relative” have to say about it?

This is the self protective reflex kicking in we use to convince ourselves that this would NEVER happen to us. You could look down for a second to help your kid with a bleeding knee and the other could be picked up. It is very rare, but sometimes it does happen. And it is not a matter of being a parent guilty of child neglect.

Who brings their 3 and 5 year old to a playground and sits in the car where they can kind of, sort of keep an eye on them? If the mother could see her daughter she would have seen her being taken into a van which was also presumably in the parking lot. It's a strange set of circumstances and I hope and pray that they find that little girl alive and unharmed. She looked carefree, happy and very sweet in the video surveillance tape from the store they were in right before they went to the playground.

The swings are just north of the basketball park. There are two places to park. One is south of the basketball park in the main parking area and the other is a smaller lot to the east of the playground. It is believed the mom was in the smaller lot and could see the playground from her car. However there are some bushes / buildings that block the full view of the slides.

Oh I got that wrong. Mom was apparently in the southern parking lot in a spot that gave a view to the playground across the basketball court. The 3 year old pointed that the child had gone in the direction of the smaller parking lot / buildings.

Well at least the 3 year old was paying attention. I'm sorry, that is just beyond careless of that mother.

I don't have a lot of patience for this kind of stupidity, not when little kids are involved. I hope they find that little one.

It sounds like a difficult family situation. Mom is 19 with a 5 year old, 3 year old and one on the way. 5 year old actually lives with maternal grandparents but mom had picked her up along with mom's younger sister (9 year old) to go to the park. 9 year old was in the car doing homework while the two younger kids played. Mom apparently went to the car to talk / help younger sister with her homework. Mom was only away from the park for less than 10 minutes.

Ten minutes!!! That is a long time.

This reminds me of a similar “I brought the child to the playground and left them there and now they are gone!” case.

Jahi Turner in San Diego back around 2002 or so?

The mom apparently looked for her daughter for about 15 minutes before she called her brother who came to help look for her. By the time they called the police Dulce had been missing for over an hour and probably many of the potential witnesses at the playground had left not realizing that a child had disappeared.

PPs who are blaming the mom are seriously disgusting me right now. Callous, uncalled for, and placing blame in the wrong hands. The risk of abduction is remarkably low, the lowest it’s ever been in history. Yes it happens, and lightning can also strike your child. I just can’t believe that when this is clearly a case where the child is taken by a stranger and meant to be harmed in a horrible way, the focus is on the “neglect” of the mother who dared to take her children to the playground while helping her niece with her homework in her car.

And I hope that little girl is found safe . I would never wish a horror like this on any parent. I do think that the mother was careless and I do think that waiting so long to call police has compromised her daughter's safety.
