Eureka Math - I am SO ANGRY

How is it that all of us managed to learn how to count accurately not following the “math way”

What a load of BS this is. You have no idea what you are talking about

You guys need to stop coddling your kids.

My kids were doing great until his teachers told him that he needed to start at the bottom of the letter "i" and work his way up to the dot. Likewise with the letter "l". As for "d", you are supposed to make the vertical bar first than make the circle on the left. Or the "o" is clockwise rather than counter clockwise. This undid everything they knew coming into Kindergarten and to this day, and screwed them for writing cursive properly.

Wtf, seriously?!? That makes no sense and is not helpful for writing left to right.

I sing this song with my students as we practice writing letters.

That has nothing to do with the math curriculum and be grateful you have one. You can easily buy books on it online. Its very normal at our school to get worksheets and no help/explanations. Homework hotline is great.

Ugh. That honestly looks awful.

Children mimic their parents emotions. I agree that this type of math is terribly frustrating but please be low key about it at home. No need to add to the stress.

This. Please don’t be offended but I think that you need to chill out a bit. You and your kids will get through this. My 4th grader didn’t get any math homework this week. When he brings it home and I struggle with helping him, I will not let him see my frustration. I will read the materials sent by teacher, search online and/or reach out to the teacher for assistance. In that order.

Forgot to add that I wonder if OP is a troll. Why is being a troll even a thing? People are weird.

My kids MCPS teacher specifically asked us not to help with homework, because then she doesn’t get a good idea what they are struggling with, and what they need extra help with. If the parents are helping the kids with homework, then it looks like the kids have no problems with it, when they very well may.

Good news for you - Eureka Math is completely free and accessible to anyone who registers on the Great Minds website. In MCPS, each student is provided with three workbooks for each of the modules they complete in a year. The book that has the homework sheets also has "homework helpers" that give parents an explanation and examples for how to solve the problems for each night of homework.

I learned to count this way in lower elementary in the late 70s. It’s so weird to me that people start in the middle of their hand/thumbs.

Does your son identify as a pinky counter? We have a thumb counter.

Well, as this thread shows, MCPS can't win either way.

Yes...if your kid is really struggling to do their homework independently, put a post-it note on the sheet saying "Larla worked on this for 20 minutes but couldn't figure it out." That's important information for the teacher to know.

I don’t know if OP is a troll. But help with Eureka math - for parents - is all online. You definitely should have heard about that at BTSN. Whenever mine have had an issue or question, I just look it up.
