Who in history has used legal gun ownership to defeat a tyrannical government?

There is nothing stopping the us from doing that. We no longer have well regulated militias.

My hunch is if ‘goverenment’ started going door to door to rounding up firearms, we’d have some well regulated militias form up rather quick.

OP is getting the whole premise wrong.

The reason to have armed civilians is to PREVENT a tyranical government from taking over our democracy -- witness what Chavez and Maduro have done in Venezuela.

The Nazis lost more than 3.5 million men (that's more than 8 times the total losses of the U.S. in WWII) on the Eastern Front alone. That's one campaign and does include their combat with the Americans, British and Canadians. So, um... they weren't worried about those pesky Swiss and the "nightmare" rolling through Switzerland would have (not) presented.

In this day and age, no citizen militia— no matter how many military assault rifles it amasses, could challenge the U.S. military employed by a tyrannical federal government. It’s ludicrous to think otherwise.

And even if an armed citizenry overthrew the government, what makes anyone think that the result would be democracy? People who come to power through force usually choose to stay in power through force. One tyranny would replace another.

We have a democracy. It’s up to the citizens to make sure it works.

LOL more so vs Russia? They used Switzerland as their bank. They could have easily invaded and defeated Switzerland. After France fell the Germans completed surrounded Switzerland and had 102 divisions(about 2 million men) they could have put to the operation. It is fantasy think the Germans would not have won and won easily. Sure a few people can holdout in the mountains but the Germans were known for removing town for punishment for resistance.
