Is this cultural appropriation?

This world is going to hell in hand basket.

Only a black person can truly understand it. Just like only gay men can understand Andy Warhol. Or people with one ear appreciate Van Gogh.

It's really pretty easy to understand.

DP. I don't mean to sound dense, but maybe it's having a newborn and not sleeping the last 13 days .... Are all of you saying it is or is not cultural appropriation? Regardless of th op being a troll / making up the pta- she probably wants one herself and is anxious people will think its cultural appropriation at mclean elementary or w/e

Here's what you should do any time you suspect there is cultural appropriation and you are not of the race that you feel is being appropriated. Ask someone of the race that is being "appropriated." Use their opinion as your new litmus test. However, the chances are that you don't know anyone of the race that is being appropriated. If that is the case, stop and let it go.

I didn't think anything of it, I love the poem myself, but do not have tattoos. But apparently there is an uproar about it being cultural appropriation and some parents have been passing around a petition to be presented to the PTA and BOE to have her banned from school events if it is not covered up?! This seems outrageous, it's not racist or harmful. To me, she is appreciating Maya Angelou.... please teach me.

You're saying that people are passing around a petition asking a governmental entity to ban a person from the premises based on the words on the person's arm?

IF this were true, OP, it wouldn't be outrageous because the woman's tattoo isn't racist or harmful. It would be outrageous because it would mean that there are people in the DCUM demographic who have never heard of the First Amendment.

Right. But don't worry OP, it's just never going to happen.

Wait. Please don't listen to this poster. Super super super incorrect....

You cannot just ask a random black person, and take their opinion as the voice of all AAs. DON'T

There is no way that this is a real post, UNLESS you are talking about some uber crazy liberal private school? But I don't think private schools have PTAs and Boards of Education.

So no, I don't believe this is true.

OP, link to the petition.

My friend has this tattoo (not the person OP is talking about). She has been through some horrific traumatizing stuff in her life. Stuff that would make most people give up. But she carried on and made her way through it and has a good life now. The whole "and still I rise" always inspired her.

I've never heard anyone say it's cultural appropriation

It can be appreciated by all.

This is a troll post set to stir sh!t. That’s why the world is going to hell in a handbasket.

What is sad is that not enough people on DCUM really know any black people well enough to realize this is BS.

Because no actual real and sane person would think that. As a black woman, if I spotted your friend’s ink, my first reaction would be admiration, not outrage.

This is typical high school is out for summer trolling on DCUM. Some 15 year old who fancies himself a conservative cyberwarrior after the girl he liked turned him down in favor of another girl or a black guy or the president of Young Democrats.

Sure ya can!! Just make sure you preface your inquiry with,” excuse me person of color, as an ambassador of your race and spokesman of all things black culture.”
It should really be a complete stranger to you. You want to get a scientific response. Actually, that’s good too. Make sure to tell them this is in the interest of science.
