Gold Cup

Anyone that thinks Sargent is better than Altidore right now is out of their minds.
The sad truth is, Jozy is still the best overall striker we have right now, and the team was better against Venezuela when he was on the field.
Don't get me wrong, Sargent should certainly be on the roster though.

Do not disagree, but would rather see the Sargent's of the world than the Bradleys and Altidores. Let the youth movement take over. the reality is that Altidore and Bradley likely wont be there if we qualify for the next World Cup so lets give it to the kijavascript:void(0);ds and see where they can take this.

It just doesn’t make sense. We’re “experimenting” and “figuring it out” because “these things take time.” So why not do that with our most promising players? You know, since we’re only experimenting after all.

This comment, along with the one about where is Josh Sargent, are spot on. The USMNT is presumably trying to build towards qualifying for the World Cup in 3 years. Not trying to win this year's Gold Cup. Altidore or Zardes might be more valuable than Sargent for the latter, but certainly not the former. Altidore and Zardes will be 32 and 30, respectively, in the next World Cup. Josh Sargent will be 22. He needs to be given as much senior team experience as possible over the next 3 years to see if he can be a meaningful contributor to the team when they actually get to qualifying and, hopefully, the WC. The same is true for other young team members. If those young players don't develop over the next 2-3 years, then the coach can always fall back on more known commodities like Altidore, Zardes, etc.

Berhalter may not be long for his position as head coach.

I think it's funny looking at the comments here.
Half the people seem to be saying, 'if they don't do well in the Gold Cup, fire the coach,' and the other half are saying we should only be concerned about development towards the next World Cup.

Not necessarily contrary thoughts. In order to develop a team you need a good coach. Also why Sargent over Altidore. WC is several years away so out with old and in with promising new regardless of who’s better now.

Altidore is an okay strike at a certain level of play. He will not pose a threat or concern to a team with high level players. He is just too one dimensional.

It doesn’t make sense that we wouldn’t select our “striker of the future” in any of the National Teams within our structure so he can, idk, learn the system? Since Berhalter is all about his system before the players. But what do I know, it’s only common sense.

True. But saying as we have no strikers that are any better at the moment, why kick him off the roster?
I'd certainly rather see Sargent than Zardes, but not over Jozy.
Sargent should have been playing at the U20s. And barring that, he certainly should have been on the Gold Cup roster. But make no mistake...he would have been on the bench the whole time.

Meh, Jozy will be 32, not 36. He still has one more WC in him. Let's concentrate on actually qualifying this time, and for that, we need our best players. He's our best striker, no questions asked.

His play also helps develop the other 10 guys on the field with him... Whoever posted the US was better against Venezuela with him on the field was spot on. It was night and day.

You don't qualify for the WC by winning the Gold Cup. Gold Cup is an opportunity to test young players, which is what Mexico is doing by bringing their B team. If we go to qualifiers with Altidore and Bradely as starters, we are in trouble and have learned nothing from the previous failure to qualify.

If he’s our best striker, then we aren’t qualifying. Lucky for us, he isn’t.

His touch and technique are pretty bad. He reminds me of under u13 travel soccer- big, fast and strong. Stop forward progress and everything falls apart.

Who then?

Pulisic is an attacking mid
Johansson? I wish...
Bobby Wood looked like the answer at one point, but has knee problems and isn't playing for his club.
Sargent is promising, but it just getting started...
Zardes?

Why is Zardes on this team?

Well, you’re seeing why we struggle. My opinion is out with the old and in with the new. Start by using the only guy to ever play for PSG and have a great soccer parentage. Weah. He is untapped potential with creativity not seen on the USMNT and will strike fear into the opponent even if he is still a bit raw.

Also, yes Pulisic and Sargent. We have enough midfielders to move Pulisic. Use Weah and Pulisic up front with Sargent in the middle. Let the youth reign for the next several years and develop and grow towards the WC. Yes, play a 4-3-3. McKennie and Adams in mid with tbd (best player to emerge). Defense is a problem, so we need to score, hence the 3 young forwards. Let them gel along with the two promising young mids. On D ... I like Miazga but that is about it. Not sure what to do there other than never let John Brooks see the field again. He’s awful.

That’s the American way. Countries like England have the big, fast and strong, but they also have impeccable touch and technique. US has always had strong athletes, but not touch/technique. Look across all youth top teams around here—winners are missing touch/technique. Now that my oldest is U14- I’ve really seen it in first Divisions. The teams get bigger by each division. My kid’s team is playing teams where the teens are literally a foot taller and can all shave. They can keep the score close with but a fast break by huge players and they are no match against long ball teams. If they stick at it that will reverse. The problem is that kids start aging out around here by 16/17/18 and it’s too late.

This right here is another reason why Berhalter ain’t it for me. Athleticism has always been a strength for us. We should be taking advantage of that by having our fullbacks bomb up and down the field to create overloads and use the full width of it, not making them tuck into a central position where opponents can swarm and we have no wide outlets to play inside-outside.
