Even the crazy competitive programs let them swim just 2-3 days at that age. The problem is them getting sucked in to needing to continue because your kid feels comforabwle there and in a few years the competitive ones ramp up to a ridiculous 5 days a week for older ES kids.
I would ask what kids from the local summer swim team do for a day or so a week in winter. Some have a relationship with a year round team that lets them do this type of low key swim. OR - take the risk of getting sucked in and you have all the main options then since 9 years old will be at most 3 days a week. |
We are members of VLAC. Coach Shawn is great! We practice twice a week. Its not super competitive, which is great for my daughter. They really stress technique. Meets are optional. Only downside is the practice times. M/W/F they practice at 4:30 - 6:00 at the Renaissance (next to George marshall HS) and Tues/Thurs at the YWCA across from Kilmer from 8:15-9:45. |
Meant to add its PM and not AM. |
Norman Swimming. 1 or 2 x a week. Practices are at Spring Hill, Yorktown or W&L. |
Can someone explain the differences between Norman and York Swim Club?
Also, how challenging is it to transfer clubs, say from York to AAC? |
sooo.. while there are certainly kids that are super competative with these clubs, there are plenty who are probably not. Winter swim is or at least can be really nice with the right fit. Sure there are swim meets, but the nice thing is your kid should be seeded against kids of similar ability and age. It's not like summer where your clubs best three go up against another clubs best three. if you want to swim a stroke you probably can. At least that is how it worked at our club this winter. I would talk to a club that is near you and talk to some families similar to yoru situation and also talk to coach and see what they say. Just because it is a competative club does not mean there might not also be room for kids that are more developmental or are less intense. |
“Sure there are swim meets, but the nice thing is your kid should be seeded against kids of similar ability and age.”
But the competitive teams are the ones that want their swimmers in the pool like it’s a job - 5 days a week all year long. Insanity. |
Maybe some older competitive swimmers practice that much, but I don’t know any younger swimmers who do. My kid is on both year round and summer teams that are competitive, and the vast majority of her peers (12 and under) have 2 day practices during the year, with the usual 5 days for summer. Those that swim more than that choose to do it, they aren’t pressured by the club. |

I disagree. Mine started 4x per week at age 9 and will be at 5x by age 12. Older swimmers practice 8-14x per week. Like another poster noted, these kids swim like it's a job. Your kids may be with a more relaxed swim club or in a less competitive section of a rigorous swim club. But the concerns that parents have that swimming is too demanding are real and based on facts. |
Lol. My kid’s summer pool is top of Div 1 in the NVSL, and she swims year round with other kids who compete with her in all stars and jr olympics. Many of them, at 10 and under, swim on the 2 day a week schedule with my kid. I’m not saying that there aren’t other kids doing more, but a talented swimmer doesn’t need to do that much at that age to be competitive. That’s based on facts, too. |
That's great for you. It's also the situation that you have and not the same as everyone's. |
Ditto for downcounty MD. Do these exist? Want it for ADHD + anxiety cild year-round to help regulate behavior. The Ys are far (traffic) from where we live. Thanks. |
Which was the point of the post; some swimmers might be practicing 5 days a week “like it’s a job,” but not all are. |
Capitol Sea Devils have weekend clinics where you can swim one day a week and learn all the strokes. They also have less competitive age group levels, and Age Group 2 is for 10 and unders who can swim 3 strokes and they practice 1 hour 2x per week. Age group 3 is for 9-12 year olds and they swim 3 x per week.
If you want more, you can move to the competitive groups: Select, Gold, Silver, etc. |
