Hate DC speed humps

Because they are in residential areas, and people should not be speeding in residential areas. How would you like it if cars came barreling down your street at 45 miles per hour while your kids were playing in the front yard, or while they were about to cross the street to get to their friend’s house? Not so much? Right - we don’t like it either. Slow down or use non-residential streets.

Some people see speed humps as another manifestation of NIMBYism. The public streets belong to all.

Do you all call them speed humps in DC?

No, we call them speed bumps. OP is just a nutjob.

They aren’t gates. Slow down, Zippy.

There are street signs in DC that say “Speed Humps” so that may be the city’s official name for them.

My street has one a few houses down. I love watching cars go by too fast and bottom out after hitting one too fast!

Apparently there is a difference between speed humps and bumps. https://www.reliance-foundry.com/blog/speed-humps-vs-speed-bumps#gref

Well, some people are idiots.

Are you under the impression that the speed humps prohibit you from driving on the street? Or that the residents on the street don't have to drive over the same speed bumps?

I'm all for traffic calming but not at all a fan of the speed bumps/humps that can only be driven over safely at half the speed limit or less. As in--you can be driving the limit or even 5mph below and still bottom out on a lot of these humps/bumps.

I enjoy hearing the drivers bottom out on the bumps on our street and don’t mind if they honk while damaging their car.

Notice they do not put these on major roads. Stop using our street as a cut through because there are stop signs (that you roll through, speed-bump-haters) instead of lights.

People shouldn't speed in residential neighborhoods anywhere, city or suburbs. So on that basis I'm a fan of speed humps.

But the PPs insisting that you shouldn't cut through neighborhoods and that all traffic must stick to main roads need to grow up and shut up. You live in a highly congested urban area. You do not live in a gated community. Cars and other vehicles may and should traverse past your precious home. Forcing all traffic on a few main roads doesn't improve anyone's lives.

Personally I hate the workarounds that have been developed in the old money neighborhoods of Chevy Chase MD to make it difficult for traffic to cut through -- so I do so (at the posted speed limit) every single chance I get. And I might honk a little too!

The city only puts them in by request, so wherever you see one, it's because someone on that street asked for it. So now they get to hear my horn at all hours of the day or night. I hope it annoys them as much as their bumps annoy me.

My DH does this too.

So he thinks it’s ok to wake up people - and their sleeping kids - because the neighborhood wanted to keep their children safe by having DC install traffic calming?

Here's a thought. If you were any kind of parent your kids would be safe without speed humps. That's because you would actually, uh, parent and keep your brats out of the street.

Go ahead and honk your jealousy.

I guarantee OP is a Maryland driver.

Don't tell me, let me guess. Your's is a Maryland vehicle that comes into our neighborhoods in DC every day?
