Does anyone's kids do BOTH house AND travel soccer? Is that weird?

It was a waste because of all the conflicts. I would skip rec.

We had the same dilemma last year with VYS. Chose travel at U9 and couldn’t be happier. Every girl on our team is returning; my DD and a few others are moving up as well.

A lot of leagues won't allow it. My daughter chose not to try out for McLean because they wouldn't allow kids to play for other clubs or teams while playing for McLean travel.

We did ASA Travel plus Rec for one year - my daughter loved her rec team and didn't want to leave it. We only had 1 conflict each season, and had to pick travel over rec in those cases. She was on a lower team.

We then moved back to ADP and we've done ADP plus rec for four seasons. Every season we have a conflict or two and we generally favor ADP unless rec really needs us and ADP is ok without us. I'd estimate that 2/3 of the girls on our ADP team are also on rec teams because they still enjoy playing with their friends.

ASA changed the rules so that we can't have travel players anymore, which is fine. We'd cut our travel girls from the roster last year because there were too many conflicts and we needed the roster spots for girls who could/would actually show up. (these were higher level travel girls.)

Travel + Rec worked for us mainly because the games tended to be on different days. The practice schedule got to be a bit much sometimes - 4 days a week. And if you had a far-out travel game, it made it hard to show up for a rec game.

ASA + Rec games are mostly on Saturday, so Saturdays are sometimes hellish for us - we're often running from one venue to another with 15 minutes between games. And you have to get the practice schedules to work out. But at least all the games are in Arlington.

We're planning on a version of this for next season: Travel team in Moco + rec team my kid loves. Travel will get priority in case of conflicts, both coaches are aware and fine with it.

It’s not allowed in Virginia soccer so never had the option.

I’ve waited, day after day, for 5 years to read that response.

1) is it logistically possible to do both? -->Yes, we did it for 4th grade. We had to skip a lot of Rec practices to prioritize travel practices. The times conflicted. We made most of the rec games though.
2) does it even make sense to do both? -->Rec is for fun. It can give your kid a boost to play in Rec. My kid had fun but didn't want to do it again, she felt it was too easy for her.
3) am i crazy?
-->Yes, but we're all a little crazy. Travel is a crazy commitment, if you can make Travel work, fitting some Rec games and few practices in will not be an issue. But only if its fun!

Yes! My daughter has been on a travel team for 4 years, but missed playing with her friends from school on the rec team so she does both. We prioritize travel, but make the games for rec that we can. I think it also brings the fun back into the sport for her and builds her confidence up. I notice she takes way more risks in rec than she does in travel.

It’s fine. LMVSC lets 1 travel kid on a rec team. Let your kids go crazy and play with their neighborhood friends. It’s over in a blink of an eye.
