Willards BBQ - it is great

Thai Basil is one of the best Thai restaurants around. Yes, it is in a strip mall just off 50 past 28. Five minutes from Udvar-Hazy. Mikaku is an authentic Japanese restaurant at McLearen Square at the corner of Centreville Rd and McLearen. Five minutes from Udvar-Hazy.
Zeffereilli's in Herndon is an excellent Italian restaurant. It is on the other side of the Dulles Toll Road from Udvar-Hazy. It is more elegant than the others and is ten to fifteen minutes.

Otani's is a Japanese steak house where they cook the food and entertain. Lots of groups go there for birthdays.

None of these are chains.

I also agree with a PP who mentioned Ford's Fish Shack, but it is a greater distance away.

Yeah ... it’s not that there isn’t this stuff in the suburbs. It’s just not right near UH and would add quite a bit of driving into your trip in the opposite direction. Even the suggestion to go fords sends you 20+ minutes west into Ashburn.

Please note the post at 19:49.

Too bad you didn't ask before you went to Udvar-Hazy. Three of those are five minutes away and meet the request of OP--except for farm to table.

There is a good place to get Chettinad chicken, if you like good food rather than Outback Steakhouse.

It's pretty close to Reston Town Center where there are several good restaurants and it's nice to stroll around the shops- Passion Fish is quite good.

Thank you 19:49 from a PP. These are good options and I haven't heard of them before!

Fosters Grille - shopping center off Westfield’s. Best burger and fries, milkshakes too.

NP here. It's a waste land out there. I've Googled this before, and didn't come up with anything inspiring or very close by. This is a totally valid thread for OP to start.

Willard's is a good BBQ place, but know that it is super casual--go order then pick up and eat at your table on styrofoam.

OP mentioned interest in places on the way back, as well as close to Udvar-Hazy. Reston Town Center is right off the DTR. OP needs to know, though, that parking there can be confusing.
