Why DGS? These are DCPS decisions. DGS' job is to determine feasibility and options for what DCPS tells it to do. |
The feasibility study on which the decision to move Banneker to Shaw was made was commissioned jointly by DGS and DCPS. The question why it didn’t involve any consultation with the Shaw community would be a valid one for DGS. |
Seriously: When was the last time Council overturned the Mayor on a major staffing or funding decision? |

On 3/25, reps of Shaw community presented @MayorBowser w/a forward looking development plan for 925 RI Ave NW. It includes a 600-student middle school and affordable housing ... On 3/29 DCPS announced the award of the design build contract for Banneker at Shaw. |

Don’t forget!
Cardozo Feeder Pattern Middle School Planning Community Meeting on April 25 scheduled for 6PM-8PM at Garrison ES (1200 S St NW, Washington, DC 20009). |
God I hope there is not a 600 kid middle school in the pipeline. If 'shave shaw' people do their math and they get to 300 likely in feeder school kids from the feeder elementary schools why are they doing 'plans' for a 600 kid middle school? Just to replicate other not so great ideas of DCPS? Someone needs to save Shaw from save shaw MS. |
Just stop. Go away and stop. |
| for PP: DCPS is so student-mobile, there are students criss-crossing the city EVERY F-ing Day all over the place. Having a middle school in a place that is easy to travel to in many ways makes more sense than a neighborhood model that relies on people traveling against the normal travel flow of the city to downtown and back. |
So why build another neighborhood school? I would vastly prefer that DCPS accelerate the plan it has floated to make the old Banneker building a city-wide, test-in MS. |
|
^^ actually it may not be a 'test in' middle but an application middle.
Either way it makes sense to me. |
Ah! Why a neighborhood school? That's because it's only a neighborhood school once it's full. |
You have a neighborhood school in a building facility within the Cardozo building (same as New North/Wells is getting). Work on a separate principal (Wells has one) and effective partitioning. |
Brookland middle is expected to only be at 30% capacity in 5 more years. Why on earth do we need another do we need another middle achool that’s more of the same? Any future middle must be a city wide magnet. |
