Sligo Middle School thoughts

What school was that?

not here, some other metropolitan area

There is a new elementary school being built that opens in 2012 and a boundary study won't be done till 2011. It is going to pull from Woodlin and Oakland Terrace. No word on what middle school it will feed into.

FWIW, I know people who are completely fine with Sligo middle. The only criticism I've heard is re: weakness in science but I don't know if that problem is particular to Sligo or not.

According to MCPS Website and Woodlin Principal, the boundaries are not changing for Woodlin Elementary. Only Oakland Terrace is affected.

PP is correct. The boundaries are final and Woodlin was not affected (http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/planning/pdf/DCC29ES_Greensheet_111711.pdf).

Re: Sligo, I have not heard much. My kids are slotted for Newport and many in the neighborhood either are going to magnets and immersion schools. The few who are going to Newport are smart kids and the parents like the school. The parents who were just slotted for Sligo (based on the recent changes) are taking a wait and see approach if their kids are in elementary school.

On the other hand, we were concerned about Sligo because of fighting/bullying. Last year they had 50 suspensions, mostly for fighting. Then again, compare that to Cabin John MS in Potomac with much fewer incidents (~18), but 3 suspensions for arson/explosives and 3 for weapons.

I volunteer at Sligo because the Kindergartners from Oakland are there. Never saw a disturbance while there.

The "arson/exposives" suspensions involved lighting toilet paper on fire in a bathroom. The weapons suspensions involved Scotland students with knives in their purses.

You didn't need to identify the students' neighborhood.

Is that not politically correct?

Scotland is the only low-income area zoned for the school as a way to "balance out" numbers.
