He plans on majoring in math/stats & a social science. He mostly likes volunteering & outdoors activities. He doesn’t want to go to a school where everyone is stressed & it’s a hyper competitive environment. Normally I would think a SLAC, but he finds them too small.

The midwestern state schools have good math depts and probably good social science, e.g. IU, Wisc, MSU, Mich. And are as relaxed as you want them to be.

They also are the kind of place where there is place for a wide variety of students. And all of them have good outdoorsy activities nearby.

Notre Dame. Religious aspect of school attracts kind and non-competitive students. That combined with the excellent academics, strong reputation, supportive alumni network, and gorgeous campus makes for a very happy student body.

There are only a handful of schools that don't satisfy this description (Caltech, MIT, Chicago). Choose any one but these.

OK I take this back. I just reread the PP's post and didn't notice the stats and ND would probably not be an option. In this case I would say perhaps Villanova or maybe even BC (but that school has gotten tougher to get into lately). Many of the Jesuit schools would likely have the environment the OP's kid is looking for.

Check out Princeton Review’s list of the “happiest students” for some ideas.

Shocked me W&M was top ranked. Must be due to self-selection: the students know what they're getting into and the ones who don't drop out or commit suicide are "happy."

How us Rice on there? Tons of miserable stressed kids. My DD’s friend’s roommate attempted suicide and she found her. Only 7 weeks into 1st semester. Roommate left, She finished the year and never went back.

Apparently you didn't know that Fr. Hesburgh, the former president, was one of the drivers of the civil rights movement along side MLK. Educate yourself. Maybe go see the new documentary being released next month.
