Another birthday party question

Does the mom think that the boys are closer than they really are? Since you are best friends with the mom and the boys aren't so close, why not just have an open conversation with her about it? "Johnny wants to celebrate his birthday this year by having an intense game of soccer (or whatever) with his teammates/soccer friends. We are also planning a special birthday dinner/outing for him and would love for your family to join us for that celebration."

This. Definitely agree with the posters who suggest getting the families together to celebrate. Given the personalities it sounds like it'd be more fun for everyone, and no forcing needed.
