You found a psychiatrist that takes insurance? If so, can you please share the name. I really hope your pediatrician can help you out with the prescription.

Our pediatrician has definitely helped us when we've been stuck between doctors. She just asked to see the bottle so she could prescribe the same thing and make sure the scripts weren't being written too close together.

Your DC may be too old, but a developmental ped may also be able to prescribe ADHD meds pretty well.

We have done meds just through out pediatrician, mainly because we got lucky and the first thing she recommended turned out to work well. But, our primary care dr. is the lead for ADHD treatment at the practice and while she's not a psychiatrist has had additional training focused on that so I was ok with that as a first step. If it required more trial-and-error I'd have asked for a referral to a psychiatrist.

My son's pediatrician has always prescribed the ADHD medication. It's worked fine for us.

OP here. Pediatrician will not work with us without a full scale write-up. Maybe it is time for DD to grow out of the pediatrician. (I know we sent a copy of everything to them...).

It seem that all they want is my money.

Our pediatrician (capital area pediatrics) will prescribe but she advised us that if we need multiple drugs we’ll need to see a psychiatrist.

My kids do not go to a pediatrician. Starting at around age 3-4, they starting seeing our family doctor. He is great and I like the fact that he sees and knows everyone in the family.

OP here.

So, we have a new psychiatrist. This doctor seems to be more cognizant of issues of concern for a 16 yo girl, which is good.

She has the ADD meds now (sort of). She is also going to rework the antidepressants because the meds she was on can lead to weight gain.

DD has been upset about her weight, which has increased from about 125 to 145. Her diet is not bad, and she is active. Apparently, Abilify can do that.

Other good thing is the Dr is walking distance from the house.

So glad you found the right help. Do you mind sharing the name of the psychiatrist?

Ton of psychiatrists take insurance. In fact we never had a psychiatrist that didn't take our insouciance and DS had issue since 4 years old.

Do you have an eval? My kids' pediatrician does not prescribe ADHD or even anxiety meds. Always been psychiatrist. Now, in Indiana my SIL has pediatrician who prescribed her then 7 year old ADHD meds, and he didn't even have a full eval. It went like this, he can't focus, his sister seems to have ADHD(also no eval) so here you go. SIL is fine with this, and I kept my mouth shut, but I was absolutely stunned to hear that her kids are getting ADHD meds without a full eval, without a psychiatrist and based on a visit to pediatrician. Most of ADHD meds are controlled substances, and even my kid's psychiatrist won't prescribe any refills.

Can you please some names for the all the psychiatrists you know in the D.C. metro area that take insurance? This would really help a lot of us.

+1. Where are “ton of psychiatrists” who take insurance. Haven’t found one for adults or children.

I suspect that the pp who found “a ton” has specialized insurance like Tricare for military families.

He had a neuropsych exam last year. I told the Pediatrician I would give a copy, but they wanted to do there own evaluation. Um no.
