Well up in the middle of nowhere Urbana we have snow on the grass but the streets are just wet.

This has been discussed before, and it's not true. My son goes to a special program and most special programs are already split into upcounty and downcounty. It's a lack of political will, because doubling the administration to create two systems is just much more expensive for the County. If working parents are willing to be scramble for care every time there's a weather event for someone else and not them, then the County won't care one bit who gets fired from their jobs for having to stay home with the kids... Suggest a platform and vote if you want change.

Or, we could agree to have the same MCPS, but a flexible calendar for each cluster, and deal with transition fallout for some individuals if they have to work/study in multiple clusters.

Or we can agree that parents are ultimately responsible for the care of their kids, not the schools. Schools are there for the purpose of education and they reserve the right to close for inclement weather. Parents need to work out a plan for those days, because they will exist, and be responsible for the children they chose to have.

That would be great, if there were enough paid leave for workers. In most wealthy nations, that is how it's done: parents have a lot more paid leave and it allows them to stay home without worry in case something happens. Employees also have stronger job protection built in to the law.

The USA treats its workforce extremely badly in that regard, particularly its female workforce, since childcare still falls disproportionately on women.

So something has to give.

Sure, the workers can ask for more vacation time or threaten to go to another employer. Unemployment is extremely low, especially in this area.

Until a court decides mcps is discriminating against disabled students by failing to provide bus service when their school is open but their local cluster us closed.
