30 min test plays a big role in CES admssion decision?

Sigh. CES admission is regional. Peer cohort is not nearly as relevant because the county remains highly segregated.

OK? And they still look at peer cohort at the home school.

They can, but the distinguising difference between one school compared to the next in the same cluster is marginally different. A kid in Potomac ES is not going to look that much difference at the level of FARM, ESOL than a child at Seven Locks, for example.

DP. Peer cohort in this case is referring to an academic cohort. If an ES has 15 similarly highly able kids, that is a cohort that can be served well at the home ES. But if there are one or two outliers from this cohort, they may be better served at a CES.

True.

...which is homogenous in the segregated parts of the county that are always whining about this

No, it's not. Even in the segregated parts of the county that are always whining about this, different kids have different abilities.

Motivation- How is this evaluated without teacher input?

CoGAT- How much can a 30 minutes test result present? Really?

They don't care about motivation, but I think it's the motivated kids who go to the CES or stay. A fair number of kids left our CES in the first few weeks.

This. They are smart kids like the rest, but obviously it wasn't worth it for them to stay. I think it worked out fine this year without the teacher input. I don't have an older child so I can't say it's better than in previous years but the students this year certainly seem very motivated from what I've seen from volunteering.

Of course, but at the population (school) level, there is not a heck of a lot of economic swing between the schools. Because test scores are so closely tied to household income, and maternal education levels, you are not likely to huge differences in student outcomes or presence (or lack thereof) of academic peer groups within the schools considered for any given regional CES.

Really? My child is at one of the most economically diverse regional programs and I don't think *any* kids dropped out in the first few weeks, so I don't think universal screening is the culprit here. What I did see, compared to previous groups, was that fewer kids accepted the invitation. So the "first round" of kids that they selected did not ultimately resemble the group who came off the waitlist from our particular school.

When do we get the scores?

A couple months after they let you know if your kid got in....

Does anyone know what the criteria are for who gets asked to test? Is there a certain GPA that kids need to have to be tested? Or a certain percentile in MAP and other tests?

I think the bar to test is low. Every kid in dcs class took the test at a school with 35% farms.

it's low but not non-existent. When our DC took the test last year (at a ES that feeds into a W HS), many kids took the test, but at least as many did not. Maybe those who didn't all declined, but I doubt it.

Today private school kids took the test at Ed Office in Rockville. I estimate 25-30 kids took the test

My daughter is in fifth grade regional CES, and there isn't much studying to be done for cogat. Just make sure they aren't sick, have slept well the night before, and have good breakfast. Another key thing is not to stress them out too much about the test.

Smh!
There is an incredible amount of prepping that some parents put their kids through for these tests.

Our school said students would be able to take the test based on their inview scores. In the end, they let ALL students take the test.
