| Just put your kids in public school already. What are you trying to prove? |
| Entry in LS - We were actually advised by another school that they thought Sidwell was the right fit and it was! Mostly we were seeking a school which 1. would be a good values match in regard to raising our kid and 2. I suspected a more relaxed initial experience that gradually increased its academic intensity over the years would be a happier experience for him. This was vs. a school whose rigor was self-described as more evenly distributed k-12. My kid has had a really joyous educational experience through college. IMO the school helped him to know himself. There's something to Meeting for Worship. |
| Sidwell is fine as long as you don't expect it to produce miracles for college admissions. |
|
Can anyone speak to the culture of the current 8th grade cohort (that 9th accepted students will joining next year)? We have a male applicant but interested in both sets of dynamics.
|
| Would you choose sidwell over a public school magnet? |
Yes; this year, WIS took 6 students for 9th grade |
Not everyone lives in a jurisdiction that has a public school magnet. |
| Get accepted first, then ask questions... |
So Sidwell families are not good at answering hypotheticals which may or may not relate to their own personal circumstance? I will attempt to answer even though my child goes to another competitive private. I think this boils down to 2 factors: 1) How painful is paying the ever increasing private school tuition. Would your money be better used to pay for college/post graduate education? 2) Where do you think you child will be most happy/fulfilled? Are they more likely to want to major in computer science at MIT or be prelaw at University of Chicago? |
So families from "another competitive private" are bad at jumping to conclusions about whether PPs are actually affiliated with Sidwell on an anonymous message board where literally anyone can be posting in the threads? |
Are you the pp? If so are you not affiliated with Sidwell? Do you object to other poster explicitly stating their lack of affiliation? |
1) it is a lot of money, but we are happy to have our kids in an environment where they are challenged and thrive on the challenge. 2) no idea, they will figure it out when the time comes |
1. We can afford it.
2. We are not that worried about our kids being able to support themselves. |
PP you are quoting so I will further elucidate. 1) We are willing to make many other sacrifices to provide as quality an education as possible for our kids. 2) We are not focused on MIT or U-Chicago as an outcome. The kids records will speak for themselves when the college process concludes. Wherever they go and whatever they do, they will have the tools and drive to be successful in whatever they do. |
Every jurisdiction has a public school magnet except Alexandria. 1) We can pay for Sidwell and college and post-grad. Because we've made sacrifices elsewhere. 2) Sidwell is a decent all-purpose education, including preparation in the hard sciences/CS For the very small percentage of kids who absolutely know at age 10 that they will want MIT/Cal Tech eight years from now, then targeting Blair/TJHSST while still in elementary school makes sense. |
