I’m considering getting a dog as a pet, but also as an emotional support animal for my anxiety/depression and to get me out of the house for walks without crippling anxiety. My husband travels for work frequently and I think it would be good to have a dog around for protection, but we also have a Ring doorbell and ADT.

Muslim here with little religious knowledge. In Islam, there is what's prohibited, disliked and permitted. Having a dog not for guarding the house is disliked, but not prohibited. Since 1400 years ago, the hygiene of dogs and pets has changed drastically. Now it's safe to have a dog that's healthy and clean. Especially that you need it for emotional support. There are more important things to worry about in religion than owning a dog. I'd get me a dog if I had a bigger place too.

In some Arab countries salukis are not categorized as dogs, the reason perhaps a PP suggested one.

Here is an article about Muslims and dogs that quotes from the Quran:

You would have thought them awake, but they were asleep

And [God] turned them on their right sides then on their left sides

And their dog stretched his forelegs across the threshold

I grew up Muslim (not practicing) and grew up thinking that dogs are dirty animals - as opposed to cats, who clean themselves several times a day.

As an adult, I don't own a dog, but I think the concept is kind of silly. Just like we're taught (along with Jews) that pigs are unclean animals to eat, it's all arbitrary when you take into account how most conventional meat is processed and farmed these days. A pig is no more unclean than a chicken, in most American farming standards.

But I don't like most dogs - jumpy, loud, ones. I like bulldogs and the like.

It’s well known that dogs are ‘unclean’ within Islamic culture. I have a good friend that is Pakistani Muslim, they do own a dog but they keep him in the unfinished basement, he’s not allowed anywhere else in the house.

Recently,Iran just banned dogs from being walked in public and from riding in cars.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.bbc.co.uk/news/amp/blogs-news-from-elsewhere-47041611

According to the Islam QandA site it is forbidden in the religion if it’s not kept outside for farm/hunting/protection.
https://www.google.com/amp/s/islamqa.info/amp/en/answers/69840

“Conclusion:

It is not permissible to keep dogs except for hunting or guarding livestock and crops, and it is permissible to keep them for guarding houses so long as that is outside the city and that there is no other means of guarding the house. The Muslim should not imitate the kuffaar by running with the dog or touching its mouth and kissing it, which causes many diseases.”

Islam Qa is a salafi site. To me that’s made-up Islam. Like strict conservative evangelical Christians vs. mainline Christian denominations.

Follow one of the four mainstream schools of thought in Islam, if you are Sunni. Iran is Shia, so I have little knowledge of what they believe.

One of the quotes taken from that site is from the al Bukhari which is one of the important hadiths for Sunni.

Hadith are for all Muslims, but different schools of thought interpret them differently.

I thought Quran is pretty strict with protection and rights of animals. Many claim that negative approach to dogs is not supported in the Quran or that it is misinterpreted. I don't believe dogs are haram. But, if you were raised to think it is and you have friends and family that won't enter your home because you have a dog.... is it worth it for you then?

Not necessarily. There are many Muslims who simply don't believing in equating prophet Muhammad's words/actions as equal footing to the Quran/God's words, or believe hadith as a form of 'extra credit.'

Enough with the emotional support nonsense. I have a friend with an actual service dog and people dragging their pets around for emotional support has made her life impossible. She has ADA protection and is challenged more now than ever before because so many people try to claim they need their pet with them. Her dog actually keeps her safe and allows her to live as close to a normal life as one can while still being accompanied by a dog on a harness all day every day. Yet she gets nothing but grief in public because people can't make the distinction anymore.

And I have dogs myself. I would love to bring them everywhere with me, but have enough sense not to.

In Egypt cats are fed on the streets all the time, while dogs are shot and killed. So... there is that.

Maybe this explains why my Indian neighbor keeps his dog outside even when it's cold enough to kill the poor guy.

I saw cats everywhere in Morocco. Not a single dog though.

Islam in Malaysia is mostly from the Sunni school. And they prohibited even images of dogs during this Chinese lunar year of the dog.
