DC versus MD versus VA public school

Anonymous
The college placement metrics for Moco is skewed. Maryland doesn't have any good public colleges so high performing students have to look to Ivies for college. NoVa has UVA, Tech and William and Mary as college options for high performing students.

U md is higher in world rankings than all of those and has more spots in a smaller state.

Stay in the money trail of moco. Brookmont, Chevy Chase, Bethesda, North Bethesda, Potomac, North Potomac, Darnestown, Poolesville. All the best non magnet publics in the entire region plus easy and immediate access to all the best privates. All the best country clubs and the prettiest area of the region with the C&O, great falls all the country

Removing the Magnets, the best schools are still in MoCo.
NoVa really has one great school.

MD is always in the top 5 in the nation ( third this year after being #1 for 3 straight year).
VA never made top 5

Overall Maryland state has stronger k-12 schools than Virginia, but NOVA --particularly FCPS --is a touch stronger than MCPS. In 2018, the average SAT scores across the 25 public Fairfax high schools was 1218. The average score for MCPS was 1167. They had similar participation rates. They are both very good, very diverse school systems with similar spectrums of mainly high wealth but pockets of poverty, lots of English Language learners, that attract and support high achieving students. Fairfax schools are slightly higher performing on a wide variety of metric--but it's a slight difference that doesn't make much of a difference.

No, this is far from the truth. MCPS is stronger than NoVa's and performs better than FCPS on a wide variety of metric.

MCPS outperforms FCPS in almost every academic competitions .

And in the regional competition, it's not even close : the score is 36-4, MCPS

Your link on AP doesn't give a comparison to FCPS AP rates? DO you have that data? My knowledge of the historical data is that it's not a variable on which there is much difference between the systems, but things change.
The STEM scholar award is a particular program that FCPS doesn't participate in--they have different related ones. It's not a systematic evaluation of STEM placement.
The top Ivies may be more about the concentration of high levels of wealth and legacy--but your link doesn't work so I can't really see the evidence on that.
I don't know how you are assessing academic competitions--and the regional competition of what? There are many different competitions in many categories.
Anyway, my overall opinion to give to OP--as stated above-- is that MCPS and FCPS are fairly equivalent school systems and any differences between them are too minor to make a difference in your individual choices.

What???
Do you actually know what you're talking about? This is the Intel/Regeneron scholars. This is the mother of all STEM competitions. The biggest one.
"FCPS doesn't participate in"???? What? TJHSST was established for this kind of competition and challenge. Did you see that TJ has 6 scholars? One made finalist?

So, OP, DC it is, right? We are in DC and have sent our kids to 2 elementary school. Not once did we feel that we need to move out because the education is weak. Don't know much about FCPS or MoCo, but the Upper NW schools are like the ones I went abroad.

DP. JKLM are good schools. If you can afford to pay the price for entry, the elementary schools are excellent, among the best in the country. Then go private for middle and high school.

This is so pointless. The MD vs VA/MCPS vs FCPS thing is silly. Both school systems have excellent, so-so, and not great schools. Pick where you want to leave and then pick the best school you can afford.

Moco and fairfax pretty even. Moco gives far better private options if you want to bail public.

Does ffx only have one STEM magnet school?

MoCo has at least two -- Blair and Poolesville. It also has IB magnet, but some of the HS also have IB programs. Not sure what the difference between the magnet IB and nonmagnet are though. IB magnet is more challenging maybe?
Anonymous
MCPS hasn’t even released average SAT scores by high school for 2017-18. They are embarrassed by the gaps and how low the scores are in many of the schools.
