I know a lot of people recommend the new version, but we watched the entire thing and I have to say that as a die-hard SF fan (as is my wife) we did not enjoy this at all. All of the characters were despicable and unlikable. I like stories where you like the characters and want them to succeed and win. I honestly was not upset from any of the deaths, because I didn't really care for the characters (I liked one).
If you like dystopian futures full of anti-heroes, seemingly good people doing horrifically bad things and justifying them based on the situation, then you might enjoy this. We didn't.
The original is 70s fluff, not deeper than a puddle. The reboot is hands down the better version. This is similar to the Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie, with Christy Swanson (complete fluff) and the series (which delved into deeper issues).
I will say, I could never get into Caprica, the post-reboot spinoff of BSG.
