Cats vs Dogs

They're both good, but I think dogs are better. Right now I don't have either, but in a few years when I retire I'm going to buy a GSD. When I was a kid, my family had cats and a dog. The second cat we had, used to follow my Mum down the road to the bus stop and when she got home, the cat would be waiting on the door step for her. It was a great cat and if I could find another cat like that, I'd get one right now. However, most cats aren't like that and that's why I'll be getting a dog. I'll be able to take the dog with me for walks, which I enjoy and out for drives with me in my car. I might even get two dogs. Cat definitely low maintenance but I will be more involved with my dog(s).

Love cats.

Agree 100% I have kids for this already.

DH and I were both raised with dogs and loved them, but we both agreed we had no interest in dealing with the poop, accidents, shedding, various odors etc. Our cats are so much cleaner than we remember dogs being and we love the way they bonded to each other. We've learned to focus on temperament and have had great luck with snuggly DSHs.

^^ and the barking, good lord the barking.

However, cats just don’t fill up the house with their personality - our dog does. When he’s not home, the house just feels empty. (Though we have a golden retriever, so that’s part of it). Plus, dogs are great walking/hiking buddies, which I love.

So, I guess that I’d go with dogs, though I also love our cats. Very glad to have both.

Same! I don’t find them comparable in any way. We have 2 cats and a dog. Love them all very much.

I had 2 cats recently and sorry to say I had to rehome them. What was good about them is when I came home and opened the door, they would both be waiting for me. I'd walk in and put my stuff down and pick one up to stroke it. It would be purring away which was nice. Then I'd pick up the next cat and it too, would be purring it's head off. But as soon as I'd put either of them back on the floor, they were off and doing their own thing. Never came to me if I called them and basically never paid me any attention. Yes, that's how cats are but what I'm saying is that apart from those few minutes when I came home, I got nothing out of it. Dogs are better.

So you got rid of cats for...being cats. Awesome. Please never get a pet again lest you ditch it for an equally asanine reason.

Oh boy here we go. I rehomed the cats to give them a better home and all I said was that cats are better and some keyboard warrior wants to tell me that I should never get a pet again.

I got nothing out of it, so I rehomed them. The person I gave the cats to says that he is happy with them and the cats are happy. So get off your high horse.

Cats are cuter and less demanding but they stink. I loved cats as a child but they were indoor/outdoor cats and the litter box was always in the garage never the house. I have yet to go to someone's house who has an indoor only cat and not smell like cat pee stink. The owner can't smell it. Its seems to be a universal problem that when they get older they start peeing everywhere.

I don't like wet dog smell either but at least you can dry your dog off before it comes inside and the odor doesn't linger forever like cat pee smell.

No, it's not me. If cats are animals that just show interest in being "pets" for a few minutes a day then I stand by my comment, dogs are better. I didn't abandon these cats or take them to a rescue. I advertised on the notice board at work and asked people who I knew, if they wanted two cats. A coworker wanted them and I told him that if he changed his mind, not to dump them at a rescue, I'd take them back. He's happy, cats are happy and I'm happy.

Love cats. Love dogs. Love all animals. I have a large dog, rescue, and several cats. Fact: the cats are infinitely smarter.

If you scoop the litter twice daily, like you're supposed to, there is no smell. We have a good air purifier next to their boxes in the basement, but really it's just a precaution. And cats themselves do not smell in the slightest, it is rare to have one that is not finicky about cleanliness.

+1 Unlike dog smell, which is always there within a few hours of bathing. Dogs can be so sweet, but I can't stand the smell or the dog hair everywhere.
