Ward 4 State Board of Education Special Election

Is there an email I can send a video for Frazier O'Leary? At the time of the interview he asked to reschedule because he had to bring a friend to the hospital. Videos can be seen at Frazierforward4.com or on his Facebook page, Frazier O'Leary. He is veteran teacher endorsed by the Washington Teachers' Union and a parent to children who attended DCPS.

Mr. O'Leary seems head and shoulders above the rest. Getting students in an under performing school to believe in themselves is no easy task. He has an idea what works for kids and that is the most important thing.

Can the interviews be posted someplace other than DCUM too? I'd be very happy to share with folks but feel funny about leading them to this thread that can be full of opinion). Thanks so much for doing this!

Saw tonight event. O’Leary was passionate and has a great resume but not a ton of policy ideas.

I’ll take passion over ideas any day. Passionate people listen and endorse great ideas.

Ryan was passionate too. I just disagree with some of what he said, like supporting neighborhood preference for charter schools.

Highlights and Impressions from last night. Hopefully video will be released on FB soon.

O'Leary reminds me of everyone's favorite grandfather. He comes off as a nice, funny older gentleman. However, I heard almost zero policy from him. He often didn't answer/understand the question. I admire his long tenure at Cardozo - but he might be in over his head. My wife and I were scratching our heads a couple times based on his answers. He needs to get more informed. Multiple times he repeated the answers given by his opponents. A lot of the audience questions were asked by people wearing his shirts, which came off as "planted" to me.

Henderson isn't inspiring to me. Her answers were very rehearsed and safe. Her delivery wasn't strong. She didn't take clear positions. She apparently was endorsed by DFER (Democrats For Education Reform) and is accepting big money from corporations and PACs -- which is why she has raised leaps-and-bounds over the other candidates. I also found putting 100 signs outside the forum very obnoxious. She refused to answer certain questions - like if she would accept support from WaPo. All she basically talked about was wanting equitable schools - but so did all of them.

Ryan is definitely the youngest candidate, which might work against him. Even so he has an impressive career and accolades. It was mentioned more than once that he is a principal and was Principal of the Year in 2016. I think he is the only person still working in schools. I thought he was very passionate. Definitely a bit of a "know-it-all" but that's not a bad thing. I appreciate that he took clear positions and was honest. I also was liked that when a question was asked about why parents make school-choices that segregate our schools he was the ONLY PERSON TO SAY IT IS RACISM. Why was that so hard? He also talked about trimming the fat in our bloated central office to better fund the schools. Amen to that.

Elani Lawrence... I am sorry to say I can't remember a lot of what she said. She is a parent and worked with families that don't speak English. I remember her talking about increasing technology, but no plan on how to pay for that. There was an audible murmur when she didn't plainly state she was against guns in schools. She did say it when pressed harder, but it wasn't immediate. I was surprised how many times she passed the microphone after giving a short answer. I don't think she was comfortable up there. It's probably her brevity that made her forgettable, unfortunately.

Ward 4 Councilmember Brandon Todd sent the below email today explaining why he was endorsing Henderson.

"Dear Neighbor,

This past Tuesday was an amazing Election Day and a testament to the power of voting. We here in Ward 4 have one more election to look forward to – the special election to fill the vacated seat on the State Board of Education, Tuesday, December 4, 2018.

I am proud to support Rhonda Henderson, an innovative and visionary advocate for public education. Today I ask for your support of Rhonda and her plan to move our kids and schools forward. Are you with her?

Rhonda lives in Manor Park and currently serves as President of the Citizens Association. She is a graduate of Benjamin Banneker Academic High School, and earned a Bachelor of Arts from Columbia University, a Master of Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and a Master of Business Administration at the University of Virginia.

But it is her education resume that makes Rhonda stand out. She has been an advocate for public education in the District for over two decades. She has taught high school history, supported new teachers, and managed a division of a private tutoring business. From 2012-2018, she was a school leader with DC Prep, including serving as the founding Operations Manager at the Anacostia Elementary Campus. Rhonda recently joined the finance team at EdOps, which supports operational excellence in schools. She is the past chair of the Education Pioneers DC-area alumni board, and a mentor with Capital Partners for Education. In 2017, she was named Mentor of the Year.

As your Ward 4 Councilmember, I have the honor of representing over 8,000 DCPS students on the Council of the District of Columbia. I am confident that Rhonda Henderson will effectively advocate for smart, pragmatic policies to help all our students succeed. She supports strong neighborhood schools, family choice, and equity across our 20 neighborhoods.

Join me and vote Rhonda Henderson on December 4th!"

Keep in mind as it now stands the Board has a very limited role.

Folks on the state board have NO authority over some of the things mentioned in their interviews or brought up by posters including DC's school budgets, facilities, charters v. DCPS ...

Why do you think DFER and their types throwing so much money in? Do you think they're stupid?
