Separating, who should know

I would tell the kids now. When I separated, we continued living together for 6 months until the school year was over. We did not want to disrupt school and we also wanted to give the kids time to adjust to the idea of divorce and pending physical separation once we lived in separate homes.

What age were they? Its hard to understand how far away their birthday or Halloween is at my kids' ages so I'm not sure they would get the notion that we are separating at some indeterminate date in the future. I hope to introduce the idea to them shortly beforehand but I won't be telling them without any clear sign of a job or where I can afford to live.
