I wish people would not take kids under, say, five to performances like the Washington Ballet's unless they have already demonstrated their ability to sit quietly through a full-length production. Why risk ruining the experience for someone else? There are plenty of family-friendly productions that allow young kids to practice their audience skills, and they will still have many many years to see a "real" Nutcracker after that. If it's the parents who really want to go to the Washington Ballet, why not make a date night of it and leave the kids at home?
