Dog hates family member

If the dog attacks a small child or a person with a bleeding disorder it could cause some very real damage.

Op needs to take this seriously.

No one has suggested Prozac?

Does he kick the dog when you aren’t looking?

I tend to trust a dog’s instincts. They can’t mask their feelings like people can. I would guess that this person has been mean to the dog, or to one of you guys living in the house. That’s who my dog is mean or standoffish to. (Thinking of my Ex here, who was mean to me and to the dog.) Maybe ask your kids if anything happened?

If you can’t avoid having this person in your house, give him/her some small treats to give the dog. Maybe that’ll help.

She's already done that.

+1 to dog's instincts.
If it's one person who comes to your house ~1x/month, confine the dog to another room during this person's visits and/or try more treats.
Also ask your kids if they can think of any reason why the dog might not like this person.

BTW it could be something like a scent on the person (smell of cats? of a bigger dog? ???).

My brother tried everything to help a dog like this. They even sent her away to an intensive treatment dog rehab type place. Nothing works. They keep this dog in a kennel when people are over. This dog is unpredictable and has lunged for and bitten 3 or 4 people, so they have to be super vigilant. It's stressful for them. Op, if your dog's behavior gets worse, I'd suggest getting rid of him. If he really only has a problem with this one person, keep him kenneled.

I've seen a dog who LOVES everyone take an instant and uncharacteristic dislike to one particular person before. If this is the only person who brings this aggressive reaction out in your dog then keep your dog away from that person.

If your dog is regularly lunging at strangers when you are walking him and now he has taken to actually trying to attack one of your visitors....that would indicate a much bigger and escalating problem in the dog.

Dear Lord, and your brother is still keeping this dog? Does he have kids? This is just another dog kills owner headline waiting to happen.
