Which MS are doing the pilot program for enriched studies?

So why bother to run the class?

(Later I think they may have added TPMS and Eastern as well.)

Can anyone with a non-magnet student at Eastern confirm whether the enriched courses are being offered there?

Hmm. Tough principal there - way to protect the cohort/peer group.

Pyle hates parents who agitate for gifted ed. Really condescending toward them. At least they can no longer say “go to the magnets if you want that.” They probably jusyt everyone in the advanced class because they figured everyone would demand it anyway. What do you mean though that the principal is tough?

Other middle schools are likely to follow this..

Does that upset you? Does this appease parents if all kids have access to the enriched curriculm or do parents really only care about the quality of the peer group?

well the K-8 curriculum has sucked the last few years so they need to do something to improve things, everywhere!

It's the middle schools in the catchment area for Takoma Park and Eastern (so down county schools - not the schools who have students who could apply to Clemente and King).
It does show up differently on the course list because it is a different course.
The math course is called Applied IM.
The humanities course is called something like Investigations into global humanities.

I think some schools have only one of the courses and a few schools have both.

There are other schools with them as well.

Pyle cabin John and Westland among others

Also Hoover and Frost

The schools listed here (and following) follow what the PP said-- they are in the Eastern and Takoma Park catchment area, and not the Clemente catchment area.
For middle school magnets there are two areas, one downcounty that sends students to Eastern/Takoma Park, (this is the group or catchment area that was part of the field test last year) and the other area sends kids to the magnets at Clemente and now King. Every middle school is part of one catchment area or the other.

This has been in many of the MPCS documents - both describing the field test and the new courses. There is more information out there than a lot of people on this board are reading.

I teach in the Magnet there. We don’t have the enriched SS course. Unsure about the math one. I haven’t asked.

No, it doesn’t upset me. As long as my DC is challenged and enjoying what she is learning I don’t really care what they teach elsewhere in the school.

It’s only week two but she loves it. The teacher is rather amazing.

So your daughter is in the magnet class with peers, but all of the 6th graders have access to the enriched curriculum?

Sounds like “Advanced English.”
