| I kid you not, last weekend while driving on 490 in MD I was in the passenger seat watching the driver in the lane next to us (because they kept drifting and changing speeds) applying make up with one hand, and holding her cell phone up with her other. For real, no hands on the wheel. I am horrified that a person could be so blasé about driving safely. |
| Is it because the Maryland police aren’t as aggressive as Virginia police, so the Marylanders aren’t trained? |
| So many Virginia haters in this thread |
| But at least nobody is generalizing in this thread. I appreciate that. Your anecdotal experience is truth! |
| I take this stuff with a grain of salt since I see first hand how many people who live in my apartment complex in Alexandria have Maryland tags (to avoid the property tax on cars, I'm guessing). So how many of these jerkoffs with Maryland plates aren't actually Maryland residents and are instead just all around scumbags driving like garbage monsters, dodging taxes, and being general drags on society. |
It really isn't anecdotal with MD drivers. It isn't like there are a few bad MD drivers - it feels like they are all bad drivers. You can be driving and watch 8 or 10 MD drivers in a row make a lane change without signaling. And watch a line of MD drivers refuse to yield to someone with their signal on who needs to change lanes. Or it can be the line of MD drivers who don't pull over when an ambulance comes through when everyone else has pulled over and then don't let the drivers who did pull over merge back into traffic after the ambulance has passed and my favorite that I have seen on several occasions now is MD drivers following an emergency vehicle through a red light to take advantage of the stopped traffic. You can watch a line of MD drivers merge early over a solid white line on the beltway. And then at the next exit another line of MD drivers try to queue jump and cut over at the last minute and unnecessarily bring a travel lane to a screeching halt. You can be waiting for the bus and there are literally 4 or 5 cars, all from MD, illegally parked in a bus zone and a couple of the drivers parked there right in front of a crowd of people waiting for the bus. You can be trying to cross in a well marked crosswalk at 830AM in front of your kids elementary school with a crowd of other parents and kids and watch as 10 or 15 MD drivers in a row (half of them on their phones) fail to yield, most of them moving at low speed because it is congested and then the icing on the cake is the last driver even after making eye contact with you comes to a stop in the crosswalk itself and forces all of the pedestrians to go around their car. You can be waiting to cross the street at a light and after waiting for 4 or 5 red light runners from MD to clear the intersection after the walk signal has come on and then almost get hit by another red light runner from MD in the center lane who is running the red light from half a block away. You can be interrupted during dinner because one MD driver going southbound on your local DC street and another MD driver headed northbound (and the southbound driver can only get on your street by making an illegal lefthand turn) are in an extended honking showdown about who should get to go first despite the fact that the street is wide enough for two way traffic. To be clear there are bad VA and DC drivers too but it really feels like at most moments most MD drivers are operating their cars in some manner that is illegal and dangerous. And I think literally none of them care. So yeah I'm really comfortable making broad generalizations about MD drivers. |

^^. WOW!
In my experience I find drivers on I 66 to be the worst . I’ve seen people miss exits and reverse. I’ve seen drivers in the breakdown lane when there’s a huge X overhead indicating that it is not a lane for driving at that hour, and a variety of other infractions. I often have to drive and I 66 and I always dread it |
| + 1 to 66. But MD drivers in DC and VA drivers on 66 are just different corners of the same fiery hell. |
This. I'm from VA and Maryland police rarely pull anyone over and when they do it tends to be for what I consider more minor violations, like not stopping long enough at the right turn etc... Meanwhile, people driving like they are on the Indy 500 while texting get away with it. If MoCo and MD state police would crack down on excessive speeding , that would be awesome. The speed cameras help, but only a little. VA doesn't use as many speed cameras, but does use police to slow people down. A bonus, it would also catch some drunk drivers. I've literally seen two drivers chugging beers as they drove, and people with diplomatic platesdriving down the wrong side for the road for a half a mile. I've lived in MoCo 10 years and have enough only seen one cop with a radar gun on the streets in the whole time. |

This morning a MD driver cut me off to squeeze her car into a space not at all big enough for her. I had to slam my brakes to avoid hitting her, car behind me the same. She preceded to tailgate the car that was in front of me until a whole opened up in the other lane. Once she was in the new lane she zigzagged her way until nothing was in front her probably doing at least 50 in a 25. We were all going 35(ish) already and she zoomed away from the pack very quickly. This started in Alexandria on Rt 1 and then continued on the roadway behind Potomac Yards shopping center which is very congested in the am.
Next thing I saw was police lights, busted! I clapped as I drove by. Over 20 is reckless in VA, she certainly deserves the charge. |
I'm dead certain that the low Alexandria ranking is due to all the MD drivers coming over from the bridge - 75%+ of the drivers on Rt 1 have Maryland plates. |

When DCUM says "Maryland" drivers, DCUM is actually saying "black drivers".
I had to observe this firsthand from a DCUM'r herself during carpool before I was able to decipher the true meaning. Because literally 100% of the "Maryland drivers" she'd call out in traffic, were black. Never once in weeks of riding with her did she point out a white driver with MD tags doing something stupid. It didn't mention this too her, of course. I just nodded knowingly as if I agreed with her. Yeah, Maryland driver is racist-speak for African American driver. |
...continues on with 8 paragraphs of anecdotal examples. Idiot. |

So one person you rode with was racist, doesn't make it not-true that MD drivers are effing insane. I was traveling on the left coast recently, and was almost hit (walking) by a MD driver who failed to look both ways. She was a blonde white woman, with MD plates. Also, there's a whole Twitter account dedicated to the insanity of MD Drivers - w/ pictures of parked cars. How is one to know the race of those drivers? Just because you encountered ONE woman in a carpool who seemed pretty racist, doesn't negate the fact that MD drivers are batsh!t. https://twitter.com/MD_Driver_in_DC |
