My 2nd grader did several different camps over the summer. She seems to have liked Barrie and Lowell the best. She also liked a small French camp we do in DC. For all three of these camps, she knew kids there, which I think makes a difference.

Breton Woods Adventure Camp (7 year old). We loved the bus service from DC.

PP, can you say more about why your child didn't enjoy Calleva? We were thinking about it for this summer but I am worried about the heat, too. Were there other problems as well? Thanks!

NP. In our case it rained all week and DD got to do only a few of the activities that were advertised. That and it was miserable in the rain and she came back with bug bites everywhere.

Not the same poster but we felt the same. My 5th/6th grade son had really enjoyed the kayaking experience at Valley Mill in previous years but didn't want all the other activities so we signed him up for a kayaking week with Calleva. It was pretty hard core in terms of carrying your boat back and forth from the water (these boats are not light weight). So he was bruised and sore - he's not a big kid and ultimately he just didn't enjoy it. I think you need to be really robust for that place, physically.

We had the opposite experience! DS 8 had gone to Valley Mill three summers in a row. Couldn’t make it work in our schedule this year so signed him up for Calleva Va. He loved it! Totally grew in his short time there, returning hoarse every night from singing songs in the bus. Really hope with the care and culture established there. He went to the Adventure Camp, basically a different activity each day.

Sent our 4yo to Congressional last summer, he seemed to enjoy it quite a bit and felt like he grew a bit in some areas... more comfortable with swimming, some growth in social/emotional areas, etc... overall seemed like just a really good caring and cultivating environment while also allowing him to just play a be a kid most of the day.

Our 3 daughters HATED Calleva and repeatedly say that is the only camp they never want to do again. They hated the Port-a-Potties, hated carrying the boats, hated the camp counselors’ bawdy language on the bus, etc...They’ve loved GDS Summer, Norwood, Camp Sonshine, and the little one loved handwriting camp at Key.
