But I can't look away....

PP here. Oh totally. I fully admit my addiction to this place.

I like certain parts of CC. Their financial aid forum is filled with very knowledgeable posters.

There's great advice on the athletic recruiting forum too. For fun, my favorites are the long threads on college visits in the parents forum, especially the ones where posters identify the school that was unexpectedly their least favorite and the one where they talk about schools that moved up, down, or stayed the same after a visit. There are a lot of very funny people on there.

Fairfax Underground is the real cesspool.

In particular there is a thread for parents with kids graduating HS in 2019. The thread was started in 2015 - yes 2015, when the kids were in 9th grade.

I skipped forward a couple hundred pages and started reading and these parents are certifiable - their poor kids.

There are parents here who choose preschools based on how they will help their kids get into certain private schools for pre-K or kindergarten, which they have chosen based mainly on prestige and college "placement".

Seriously, go to the preschool forum and search "best". You'll find parents who genuinely believe that having a huge commute to preschool will be worth it because there are 1-3 "best" preschools in the DMV that will give their kid a huge advantage.

I come to DCUM for my daily dose of snark. I go to CC for actual real and helpful information.

CC parents forum can be helpful. If you are honest about your kid's test scores, GPA and financial ability, CC will give solid advice. On the other hand, half the DCUM posters compare their college admission to today's climate.

Oh get over yourself. Just what is wrong with a thread being started during the kids’ Freshman year of HS? Plenty of questions come up during the HS years such as, will colleges care if my kid takes two years of biology and skips out on chemistry? College is a really big deal. It makes total and complete sense for parents to have enough concern over it to create a thread in early HS.

There is nothing wrong with requesting advice on course selection, summer programs that sort of thing, early in high school. I do find it a bit weird that when the Class of 2019 thread was started, it was actually halfway through 8th grade, and some parents were already doing hard core cross country college visits with their 13 year olds and reporting back on their preferences for selective LACs and that sort of thing.

I like the CC Parent Cafe area. Lots of random stuff like DCUM, but attached to fairly anonymous screen names and somewhat moderated, so there's not much snark and discord. It is a politics-free zone, though, and those posts get zapped as soon as they appear.

I like it because the age skews older to parents with kids in college and beyond (way beyond sometimes as some people have posted 30,000+ times!).

Over here, you'll have someone raining on your parade no matter where your kids winds up going.

One CC thread I was on actually spun off and created a secret Facebook group. I've encountered really supportive and wonderful folks on CC. DCUM if full of not just snark, but loads of misinformation about the college process.
