My fathers dragon series? A little eAsier than some mentioned.

My son has read this entire series this summer and loved it!https://www.amazon.com/Bad-Beginning-Orphans-Unfortunate-Events/dp/0061146307/ref=sr_1_4?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1532999580&sr=1-4&keywords=series+of+unfortunate+events

My son likes a lot of the same books you mentioned.

There's a Canadian graphic novel mystery series called Max Finder that's great.
Another series of about four books by C. Alexander London (one is called We Sled With Dragons)--also great.
And a similarly short series by David Solomons, my son loved those books too. I think one is My Gym Teacher is an Alien Overlord.

Timmy Failure, by Stephen Pastis (the Pearls before swine guy). Sorta like Wimpy kid (written as a diary with illustrations), but even more bizarre/hilarious.

Ranger in Time especially if he likes dogs (about a time traveling dog)

Baseball card series (eg Babe and Me) about a kid with magic baseball cards that allow him to travel back in time to meet baseball’s greats (fair amount of social history too, including baseball stars from the Negro Leagues, etc.)

Mary pope Osborne odyssey series.

Yes! This series is great!! DC tore through them all.

From there, we found the author's Genius Files series. Five books -- totally different than the baseball series but every bit as good.

How to Train Your Dragon series - Much easier than Harry Potter.

Your kid seems to like nonfiction, so I'd also recommend:
Nathan Hale's Hazardous Tales
You Wouldn't Want to ___ series.

DP - thanks for all of these ideas - I'm definitely going to check out the baseball card series for my boys too!

For my one turning 9 next month, I already bought him as a bday gift Who was Babe Ruth and Who is Derek Jeter based on this thread!
