OP here...
So our current insurance won’t cover it. If we cancel and rebook I can then get “cancel for any reason” insurance but that means losing the $700 I’ve already spent on deposit at the resort. So that’s the question... is it worth it to lose the $700 plus spend another $500 on insurance to protect our $12,000 trip. I’m still not sure... |
Are you sure your current insurance won't cover the $700 given that your father's cancer was in remission when you bought the ticket? I'd double check that. Our chase sapphire policy would have covered that, so it seems like a separately purchased policy might as well. |
OP, I am sorry to hear about your dad. That sucks. What are your finances like in general? If you have to eat the $12,000 does that mean another trip like that is off the table for a few years? If yes, then it might be worth $1,200 to protect it. Also, the $1,200 will get you flexibility. Maybe your dad will be very ill and you will be torn, wondering if you should cancel the trip but feeling like you shouldn't because it cost $12,000. If ultimately losing the $12,000 trip wouldn't prevent you from making whatever decision you wanted (staying or going, rebooking later or not), then maybe it's not worth $1,200. DS attends private school. We never pay the tuition insurance because, over the years, it really adds up. If he had to leave school one year it would suck to lose the money, but it wouldn't prevent us from being able to afford other things. |

I'd just book a different trip that doesn't require trip insurance at all and is fully refundable like a trip to Costa Rica. You could fly on Southwest, and stay in hotels that will allow you to cancel or change reservations.
Is your dad out of town or local? We've just been through the end of life for a parent that is not local. We've made so many trips to see that parent that I'm exhausted. Getting on another plane to take a vacation doesn't even sound remotely appealing at this point. Just another thing to consider. |
