OP here... So our current insurance won’t cover it. If we cancel and rebook I can then get “cancel for any reason” insurance but that means losing the $700 I’ve already spent on deposit at the resort. So that’s the question... is it worth it to lose the $700 plus spend another $500 on insurance to protect our $12,000 trip. I’m still not sure...
OP, I am sorry to hear about your dad. That sucks. What are your finances like in general? If you have to eat the $12,000 does that mean another trip like that is off the table for a few years? If yes, then it might be worth $1,200 to protect it. Also, the $1,200 will get you flexibility. Maybe your dad will be very ill and you will be torn, wondering if you should cancel the trip but feeling like you shouldn't because it cost $12,000. If ultimately losing the $12,000 trip wouldn't prevent you from making whatever decision you wanted (staying or going, rebooking later or not), then maybe it's not worth $1,200. DS attends private school. We never pay the tuition insurance because, over the years, it really adds up. If he had to leave school one year it would suck to lose the money, but it wouldn't prevent us from being able to afford other things.
