I don't believe any doctors' offices can actually confirm at this time that they will in fact receive the vaccine at this point.
All the practices I have contacted (ped, internal, etc) have indicated they are still waiting to find out. Once they receive them, they will need to establish and announce a priority list and distribution plan. So, I think we are still a few weeks off. Seems the only places offering them at this point are some schools and hospitals administering to healthcare workers. Here is the info being put out by my doctor's office: http://www.gimg.com/PDF/H1N1availability.pdf |
| OP-who did you talk to at RHJ? I was there on Thursday and the doc indicated they planned to have it, but didn't know when it would arrive. She said I could probably get it at my next visit the first week of Nov. (though I'd really like it before then -- I was planning on calling and seeing if I could drop by for a shot if they get it before then) |
| OP here, I talked to one of the nurses that makes appointments. At my last appt, Dr. Osman had made it seem like they would have it this week, but when I called to find out, the nurse said that they weren't planning on having it and to contact my primary care giver. She said "its recommended for pregnant women, so we recommend you get it as soon as its available. try calling local hospitals." I think its the hormones, but man it really pissed me off that they weren't giving it. |
I am pregnant and will NOT be getting one. I am wary of any new medication/shot/procedure, and don't want my baby to be the guiny pig. You hear on the news all the time about recalled drugs and such...this shot is just too new for my comfort. We discussed this in our child birth class, and I was suprised at how many women felt the same way as I do. Don't let anyone guilt you into it...sometimes it's best NOT to jump on the band wagon. And yes, you may get pushed by your OBGYN (mine nearly had a hissy fit when I turned down the regular flu shot); but stand your ground! When you sit down and calculate the odds (the REAL odds--not the hysteria created by the media), you will see that the chances of getting it are not that high in the first place...and the chances of you actually having SERIOUS problems IF you do get it are even lower...now weigh those odds against the risks of a brand new vaccine. It's a personal choice. |
In the end, it's entirely up to you. I think you're right that the risk of SERIOUS complications is low, but I think you're dead wrong that your risk of getting H1N1 at all is low. Your risk of contracting it is actually quite high. And although you probably will not end up hospitalized or dead if you catch it, it is totally confirmed that pregnant women's bodies attack the virus differently and are experiencing far more complications, in addition to the reduced lung capacity. Please don't kid yourself into thinking that you won't contract it. You probably will, and it will probably be very bad if you do get it...but, yes, you and your baby will probably end up just fine after you are sick as a dog for a week. |

She's 7 weeks now; odds are very high she'll get it before the baby is born. |

I've called several OBS (my current one, my old one which was RJH,a friend's) , my GP and even the city health department. Bottom line, most offices that thought they were getting it are now not (it may have somethign to do with the complicated storage and administration protocol, at least that is the case with my solo practitioner's office, though only one person actually admitted it was that). Instead, I believe that the vaccine is going to be distributed to hospitals, pharmacies and other "mass vaccination"sites primarily. I work for the fed gov and evidently our occupational health office will be getting a supply, although they have been vague about when. Certain pharmacies and clinics will be getting it and I assume setting up priority lists, but who knows.
As for the dept of health, i was transferred 3 times, given the 'bioterrorism' agent's voicemail, and then disconnected when I tried to leave a message. Doesn't inspire confidence, but then again, this is DC city government we're talking about. I for one appreciate the updates so if others do manage to get the vaccine or more concrete information, please do post. |
| I am 14 weeks and will get the shot as soon as I can. Pregnant women are dying from the the H1N1 flu. It does scare me some that the vaccine is new, but the seasonal flu vaccine is new every year also. They say it is safe, of course, doctors also gave pregnant women Thladomide for nausea... Still, I am choosing to trust the vaccine and try to stay very healthy this winter. |

FYI, this post is about where/when it's available not a poll of whether or not people are getting it. Can that discussion please be moved elsewhere?
I too have been told by my private doctors' offices that distribution will focus on locations that can offer the shot to the general public (hospitals clinics, county health departments, pharmacy minute clinics, etc.) |

Here's the list of places to get the H1N1 vaccine...
in Montgomery County: http://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/mcgtmpl.asp?url=/content/exec/swine_flu/index.asp in DC http://newsroom.dc.gov/show.aspx/agency/doh/section/2/release/18333/year/2009 I got the swine flu shot today at the free clinic in Silver Spring. I stood in line for 3 hours but it was well-organized and the line moved along peacefully the whole time. Many pregnant women and children there. |
Does one have to be a DC resident to get the vaccine through DOH? |
